Cardio with Fractured ankle

FutureMrsB, on August 5, 2017 at 5:05 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 11

I'm in a boot for 4 weeks and cannot afford to lose 4 weeks worth of cardio! I am doing some light upper body stuff but was hoping I could get some suggestions other than lifting for weight loss.

Pilates! That's what I did when I had a sprained ankle. I met with a trainer at my gym for one session to show me what I could do without hurting myself.

I would just use machines that don't involve your foot at all. Boxing is good and you don't have to move your feet too much, just wack the bag

I second the Pilates, especially since they work your core.

If your gym has an arm bike. That can help supplement your cardio until you can do other cardio.

I would see a physio therapist.

I would definitely talk to a physical therapist before doing anything. I sprained my ankle and the Dr said if I did anything like that it would only make it worse and last longer. It's not smart to continue to aggravate injuries.

I hate to say it but you really don't have a choice. If you push it now you're going to prolong your healing process and possibly create further complications. Follow your precautions, get physical therapy, and when you're done and follow what they say to a T. You will get there again and you have plenty of time before your wedding!!!

    - sorry to be so bossy but I'm an occupational therapist and when people don't follow precautions they end up screwing their injuries up more!!!

The only real option you have is swimming once it's far more stabalized- - but Bride2Be is right- don't push- and trust the doctor and physical therapist- get in the pool as soon as you can.

Meanwhile- watch what you eat- if you can use crutches to get around- use crutches- do your weight training.

    cardio's over rated anyway

Check out POUND. You can do it sitting down but you obviously get more out of it if you can do the lunges and such. It is a great workout.

If you can't afford a video package, just order some Ripstix from Amazon. You literally rock out to songs with a good beat, like you're a drummer. It's so fun!

A rowing machine. It puts minimal impact on your fracture. If you go to a gym that has the water type, even better.

Yoga with Adrienne has a great set of videos for chair yoga that may help you out. You can also do some seated-weighted punches to stay off that ankle but get your heart rate up.

That being said, definitely talk to your doctor or a physical therapist first. You can tear up ankles really quickly and they are tough to heal.
