Just went to my cousins sweet 16 last night and my notoriously cheap aunt had a cash bar. It shouldn't have been a shock, but it was. Having to walk back to my purse to get a card to put on file because I had no cash was uncomfortable and annoying. Sorry.. Just still aggravated about it today.

The "dry is better than cash bar" or visa versa is like a discussion about what disease would be better to get

They are both bad. Suck it up and do at least a limited bar.

I mean... at a sweet 16 i would expect a cash bar but definitely not a wedding. My parents had an open bar at my sweet 16 even though I couldnt drink, and we will be having one for our wedding. My FH's parents aren't so liberal with their spending and they have a cash bar at every event they have. They suggested we do a cash bar for the wedding and I cackled evilly in their face.

My stepsister had a cash bar, it's the only thing I remember from her wedding. Not a good idea.

Mariney, I am no alkie but one or six is good when there are more than three people in the room for me. Mix in family and then children, teenagers in fact, I will knock back a few and all is good with the world.

And no, Shanita, I don't wreck the place, drive home drunk or throw up on anyone.

    For the most part. KIDDING!!!

If its the only thing you remember, you probably spent a lot of cash at that bar.

I'm with Future Mrs C, the one cash bar wedding and the one two drink ticket wedding are emblazoned in my memory. And I drank at neither.

Well would you look at what we have here?!

"I'm spending so much money on my wedding" blah, blah, blah..."my guest should be happy with self catering and soft drinks" "They're getting a slice of cake too" So I guess the peasants should be grateful, right? lol

They don't even do anything less than a full bar at our venue. 5 stars for 5 star guest, is the way we roll around here!

Shanita - you bring up an excellent point. It is true that not everyone will bring a gift. I had an open bar, but I had a security guard give out wristbands color-coded based on the gift that was brought. For example, a high cash gift would receive a green wristband for unlimited open bar. A registry gift of $50 or more got a blue wristband for 2 free drinks. If it was just a card, there was no wristband and the dinner roll and salad was removed from their place setting. Fucked if I was going to feed the non gift givers!

If I were you I'd suggest a system such as this for your 5 desserts. A gift of $100 or more can taste all 5. Anything less gets one dessert less and so forth..

People who say "I don't want my guests to get drunk off me and then drive home!!!!!11" really confuse me.

My friends and I often drink together. I often buy said friends drinks (birthday, engagement, whatever). If they are feeling like they have had enough, they say "no thank you" next time I offer.

None of them have died, or had DUI's because of me. Your wedding is no different. Promise.

Shanita, five desserts and one guest? Or guestS?

Don't call Celia names. Or anyone. It's against the rules here. You can say she sounded like one but not that she IS one. And yeah, she really is one and she's very proud of it. As she should be.

Now Kristy, she IS really thinking like a smart little beanie counter!
