Cash bar...to Have or Not To Have

Is anyone doing a cash bar? I want to serve limited alcohol but time is wearing down and I have been thinking of a cash bar and using it for a honeymoon fund (whenever we get to take it). I'm only thinking $3 for signature drinks and bottle beer and wine coolers at $2. Any suggestions? Wedding is in...

Also, forgot to mention at our venue we are supplying a small amount of wine and beer and unlimited soda. Mixed drinks are cash bar and once our amount of wine and beer is gone we arent buying more from the venue so that will become cash bar for our guests as well.
So technically im probably rude as well but oh well. We dont really drink, our venue does not offer an open bar and we in no way wanted to pay for an open bar
Do what you want! You are the one paying for it

I've never seen cash bars go over well guests. Your best bets would be to limit drinks served- whether it be the amount or what's available- or take the hit and have an open bar.

I was in a wedding that had a cash bar. The brother of the groom knew this ahead of time and brought a few bottles and guests had drinks in the parking lot. Not safe at all!

It's your wedding, so my opinion doesn't matter. Since you asked for suggestions, mine is to clearly say that they're paying for your honeymoon. I would be really upset if it was an open bar that you put on as a cash bar to make money for the honeymoon. It's in poor taste to trick people into spending money at a "cash bar" that's really a honeymoon fund. It's not the same thing as a normal honeymoon fund unless you tell people that.

I also suggest looking into the legality of it because this isn't a normal cash bar unless you're a licensed alcohol vendor. A venue doing a cash bar is different because they're licensed to sell alcohol. This would be different than that and could land you and/or your venue in legal trouble.

On top of all this, it's considered rude to have an open bar at a wedding at all. If alcohol is there, it should be an open bar. Alcohol is definitely not required for a wedding or to have a good time; I'm all in for non-alcoholic events. But, if it's there, it shouldn't be something that they have to pay for at your event or something that you use as a fundraiser.

These are just my suggestions because you asked for them. I hope you find something that works for you, for your guests, and for your venue.

I agree with the others who have suggested that you provide beer and wine, and a cash bar for liquor if you decide to offer it. I personally do not like cash bars at all, and it would definitely reflect in the gift I would give. Just being honest, but I think guests are more generous when they’re being treated to the meal and the drinks. I may be in the minority here, but I would actually also strongly prefer BYOB to a cash bar as a guest, because if I have to pay for my own drinks, at least that way I get to choose whatever I want to bring with me.
