Cashing wedding checks

Kate, on October 17, 2017 at 4:11 PM Posted in Married Life 0 20

Just a friendly heads up - if your wedding checks are made out to Mr AND Mrs (DH Last Name) you will BOTH need to sign the check and you will need to deposit at your DH's bank unless you have changed your name with your bank or you have a joint account.

Makes sense but I learned this lesson the hard way today just before we left for our honeymoon :-)

Tar Heel - you're lucky. I had cash so I had to go to the bank - normally there's a check to make sure names math the account for security purposes. It never occurred to me, but makes sense. Otherwise anyone could just steal a check and cash it!

We did mobile deposit into my savings account and had no issues. I actually signed them all.

My fiance gives me his paycheck every week (because i handle all of our financials) and we both sign it and i deposit it into my bank account. Never had an issue. Must be different for different banks!

Ugh, the check nightmare haha. It definitely depends on your bank because I found that the process with Wells Fargo was very simple. My Hubby just had to come, sign the back of the check, and put his finger print on it. When we tried to take the checks to Travis (Hubby's bank), I had to sign, provide my drivers license info, phone number, etc. They also said that it was a one time deal, otherwise anymore joint deposits and Hubby would need to add me to the account. I wish people wouldn't give checks or leave the name part blank.

There is no one rule that is the universal way this is handled by banks. Check with your bank ahead of time re their practice. No matter what the delay, it's really not a big deal as these are gifts, not part of any budget.

We learned this the hard way too. My husband had to show ID and sign the checks to put them in my account. The teller was reluctant to do it that way and scoffed at us for not having a joint account lol.

It's hit or miss...the teller who helped me pointed that out but deposited it anyway since it was obvious these were wedding gifts and that only like a few had both our names.

It depends on the bank! I was a teller at a big bank and then at a credit union! Let me tell you that what @Amanda is saying is true. If someone was rude to me about the policy I wouldn't help and make it a big deal, like you need 2 forms of ID and your marriage certificate lol. If I knew people, I would help, no problem lol.

DH was able to deposit all the checks with both our names on it without me signing them. *shrugs*

It depends on the institution. I work at a credit union and it's different everywhere. If the check says and, both people need to sign. If it doesn't say and, or says "or" or Jane/John only one person has to sign it.

The reason they made you deposit into his account is it comes across as a third party check (the person the check is made payable to is not the person whose account it's going into)

It's pretty simple stuff, but if you're not versed in it it's easy to get tripped up. I see it all the time.

We didn't even sign the checks, we wrote for deposit only on the back and they were fine.

We opened a joint account with our checks and the bank rep said "it's fine your husband can sign all the checks for you."

needless to say I changed my name the next day so this little lady could sign checks.

I signed First Maiden Last and we both signed every one with an "and." We have a joint account, so it was no issue.
