Hey all. my cousin's wedding was this past weekend, OMG it was amazing.. the venue was beautiful, the decorum was magnificent the ceremony made us cry.. the food was, SPOILED. yup, you read that right, spoiled. on the menu was a choice of chicken, lobster tail or some sort of tofu that was shaped to look like a lump of meat for the veggie only folks. I had the lobster.. so yummy!.. but a everyone who chose chicken (ncluding my brother, and her new hubby who both have shell fish alergies)fell ill a few hours later with severe food poisoning. they felt fine right up to the moment of intense nauseau and what followed later and lasted for 3 days. since her hubby was sick, they missed the plane, and the sail date for thier cruise. they had travelers insurance so they can go later, but he spent his wed night hugging the bowl instead of her. she didn't put it all together until other people informed her of being sick and she found the common denominator, the chicken. (con't)

@barefoot bride.. i don't know if she does.. i doubt it, not something your really think about at the wedding. i could ask her. but that was sat evening and today is tuesday. i would think that if they had taken some and trey (her hubby) got sick they would have tossed it. but thanks for the advice, i'll certainly keep that in mind when my day comes around -- cause this ranks high on the uncool meter.

I don't know what is the current state of Torts law in NY; but it is quite possible that your cousin has a legal torts claim against the caterer... She needs to consult with an attorney (soon), because tort claims usually need to be filed within a year of the incident...

I'm an Attorney in Puerto Rico; and I know that if that happened here she would have a claim...

Hope things work out for your cousin... If she does sue, she might even get them to settle, and avoid having to go to trial...

    Please keep me posted...

Have whoever signed the contract with the caterer contact a lawyer. I'm sure the very threat of a law suit will stimulate some action. 50 cases of food poisoning sounds like enough proof for me. Or you might contact the Centers for Disease Control. If the caterer does more than one event per day/week the CDC may want to know about this.

This looks like great advice. Just one more thing to mention and please keep in mind I didn't read all of the other posts so this may have already been suggested. Could you or your cousin do a review of the caterer on WW so none of us get stuck with the same mess?

As a rule, food poisoning doesn't come to light until a day or two later....but she had 50 guests get sick....that should document something!! If they all had the chicken, then I would say is was mis-handled in preparation, not cooked well enough or it was old and indeed starting to spoil. I have several allergies to shellfish as well, so would have had to have the chicken...could there have been cross contaminaion between the lobster and chicken...same tongs used for both perhaps?

As a business they should have liability insurance. See if you can find out who their insurance carrier is and file a claim. And as already stated call the health department. They will make sure it gets handled.

Dang, I'm sorry to hear that.......what a terrible way to end your most memorable night....i agree with pp...pls keep pushing her to do more about the issue...this isn't something that should get swept under the rug...this company HAS to do better with the food handling!
