Catering disaster

Ashley, on March 24, 2020 at 11:27 AM Posted in Planning 0 6
As many of you, we had to postpone our April 4th wedding due to our venue closing because of COVID-19. My venue has us rescheduled for May 23, 2020 in Hope's that this will be over soon. Anywho, almost all of my vendors have been COMPLETELY wonderful and helpful with the transition. The only one that is giving us a hard time is our caterer. I let the caterer know the same day that we would likely (they were playing it "by ear" at the time) have to reschedule until May 23. We were set to do our tasting today, 3/24. It was on March 16th that the caterer told me that she would be charging us $470 to "replace" perishable items. Mind you, this was 3 weeks before the original wedding date. Of course, fh and were shocked because we couldn't believe that she had 1. Bought food that far in advance and 2. Wanted US to pay for it. My coordinator stated that she needs to give us the food she paid for because it's only right. She cited "Food safety laws". She also cancelled our tasting that was set for today. I want to cancel with her, but we have already paid our $1700 deposit and she refuses to give us back. Sorry for the rant, I just can't believe this.

So sorry to hear this is happening to you! Maybe check you contract and review with your coordinator to see if there is anything you guys can do. I definitely agree with the coordinator though...you guys are paying for a service and food. If they can’t provide you with either, then you should be able to get your money back. If not all some of it.

Right! Ultimately, my goal was just to reschedule and not have to pay additional money. But she won't even allow that.

Super shady... It sounds like the caterer has a ton of food for other weddings that she's going to have to take a loss on and she is trying to cover the bill by upcharging y'all. Absolutely ridiculous! This is for sure something that I would be fighting. So sorry this is happening to you during an already stressful time!

    Things I would do:
    1. Ask for an itemized list and how the items are solely used for your wedding.
2.Ask for store/wholesaler dated receipts and proof pictures. 3. Take them to small claims court and sue.

So sorry this is happening, very sad and unprofessional on their end. ;(

Oh this is so horrendous. There are so many greedy people in this world. I've heard many people say this pandemic is either going to bring out the best or the worst in people. Obviously this is bringing out the worst in your caterer but don't let it bring out the worst in you.

Stay calm. Don't get angry. Check your facts, review your contract carefully. If you can get your deposit back, GET. IT. BACK! There has to be a way to get at least some of it back. Negotiate a little bit. Maybe tell her to keep the money she charged you for the tasting ingredients and give you the rest. Personally, I wouldn't be continuing on with a caterer that treats their clients this way. I feel like it would be a constant source of contention and grief however I totally understand money is indeed an object. Good vibes, prayers and best wishes!

Of course she doesn't have it to provide. I am considering legal action
