Catering frustrations

Danielle, on October 2, 2013 at 11:58 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

We are having our marriage blessed in the church and doing the whole big wedding thing that we never did 12 years ago. We have no money left and still don't have a cater locked in. We are thinking of going with KFC because so far they are the cheapest we can find in the area. I have done a lot things on my own but the last thing I want to worry about on the big day is the food.

Oh my, don't go with KFC! Just no! You want something nice for your wedding! What is your budget for catering and for how many and which area? Maybe we can help you find someone!

What having family pitch in and set up cold meat trays or even a potluck type deal with closest family bringing something? It can be done, we did it for a cousin and made 40# of homemade potato salad, cold cut trays, mac and cheese and other stuff the day before.

I agree with Susan see if family is willing to help out maybe have a potluck and have everyone bring a side dish and you just provide the meat either coldcuts or barb q

I don't have a budget left so it needs to be cheap as hell and I haven't been able to rally much help so far except from my mother in law. She is making cupcakes for me and then I will be frosting them. I am in Lincoln Ne and one of the reasons we were thinking about KFC is because my brother in law is a manager at one here in town. And the sad thing is that for us KFC is something nice. We are a struggling family of 6 on a single income. We don't eat out very much at all, and when we do it is usually something like CiCi's Pizza and Buffet or McDonald's dollar menu.

    Ohhhhh, please don't do KFC!

Surely we can help you figure out something better... What's your reception venue and how many guests?

I have the Lincoln Meadows Reception Hall here in Lincoln Ne and I am figuring that we will have somewhere around 150 guests

Cut down the size or cut something out thats not really needed, that way you have a budget for food.

If KFC is your best option go with it. You can put the food into pretty serving bowls. Your guests will be there for you and the food is secondary to that.

What time is the blessing? Perhaps the cupcakes, or better a cake, and punch if it's not mealtime would be less stressful and a lot less expensive.

Amy is spot on about finances. Do what you can or maybe even wait a bit.

Are you absolutely locked in on the date with the venue? I just looked at their site, and you could have saved half your money if you had booked them on a Sunday instead of a Saturday. If you've already paid for the hall, then your financial situation doesn't really allow you to postpone and risk losing what you've invested (especially ten days before Christmas).

Personally, I love KFC, but it's pretty messy,

and not something I'd expect to find at a wedding buffet. You have to feed your guests, and I'd much rather eat chicken than just wedding cake or a modest selection of cheese/crackers. PLEASE, don't alert your guests to the fact that they're eating KFC (serve regular, not extra crispy). Just put the food in regular containers and let them think they're eating fried chicken and potatoes. Make your own vegetables or salad, flavored rice, and macaroni salad. These are very inexpensive to make, and with a family of six, you have plenty of hands to help out with the prep.

Can u buy lunch meat at the store and make your own deli trays. Bag of veggies at grocery store I'm sure your kids would love to help make up the trays. Have a picnic theme maybe ask come family members to bring a side. Or bridal party.

If you want to serve KFC just rent some buffet warmers and load everything into them. I think it would look just as nice. I've seen people do comfort food buffets at weddings and no one thought twice about it. I honestly don't see the big deal. I would just make sure to not serve it in the KFC containers.

I think we all get caught up in the planning and the details and forget that these people are coming to celebrate you and your husband and your family! Feed them whatever you choose, cake or KFC. They will enjoy your party and have fun with you!! Relax!

If you're inviting those close to you (all 150 of them), then they know that you're on a tight budget and I'm sure would be happy with whatever you served and would be happy to be sharing your special with you. But I do agree about KFC being messy and not to serve in the KFC bucket. Also, are there any other local chicken places near you? When we had our housewarming a few months ago, I got 50 pieces of chicken from a chicken place and although my guests knew I didn't cook it, it tasted better than KFC and came out cheaper and I put it in a pan, warmed it up, my aunt bought potato salad from a local supermarket, I made a tossed salad and macaroni salad and everyone enjoyed themselves and loved the chicken and asked me where I got it.

I know a housewarming is a more informal setting than a wedding, but the food still went over well and a local chicken "joint" costs less than KFC Smiley smile

If you haven't sent out invites maybe cut the guest list down. I would not have decided to do a big wedding if money was that tight.

I agree with Paris. You should be more concerned with your finances than hosting a big wedding. How are you just thinking about catering if you're wedding is in two months. That's one of the most important aspects...I suggest cutting down the guest list if you can still do it.
