Catering or potluck?

Futurebarber214, on December 8, 2016 at 6:22 PM

Im debating on whether to have my wedding catered or doing a potluck style wedding as far as the food is concerned? Has anyone had a potluck style wedding? Is it a good idea or a bad idea? I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

So you've already got the answer from everyone else but if budget was part of your reason for considering potluck, consider BBQ or Italian! Both would allow a full catered meal, while being relatively inexpensive!

Potluck, like the thing my coworkers do on random Fridays because it's cheaper than buying lunch?

Sign me up, I'll bring my crockpot.

No, but really. Take everyone else's advice and hire a caterer.

ETA - I probablyyyy should have read all the comments prior to posting. Glad you're receptive to the advice you've received. Don't mind my sarcasm, I blame the tequila. Smiley winking

We are having family bring the side dishes... Catering is expensive and not everyone wants to spend the money on it.

Mariah, you might want to check with the families of the six people who died in California after food poisoning spread at a church sponsored Thanksgiving dinner how not having a professional provide food has affected their lives. Get a professional to do the food.

@Mariah H. So you'd rather have your family take a lot of time cooking instead of enjoying your wedding day? And I would rather pay for side dishes than someone's doctor/hospital bills for food poisoning. Read some of the articles from the above comments, and I would rethink your idea.

Oh Mariah, this thread was going so well.

There is nothing like treating your guests like workers for your wedding, right Mariah?

Mariah, you're supposed to be hosting the reception, not your guests. No-one owes you a side dish for your wedding.

Catering IS expensive. If you can't afford, don't have a wedding.

    DON'T DO IT!!

is a terrible idea. if people get sick they will blame you, people will bring so much food at the end you will just get overwhelmed. hire a catering company! is a wedding not a birthday party.

Bad idea. Potlucks rarely work out in general let alone for a wedding. Point in case - my work is having a holiday potluck today and we have a bunch of desserts for lunch and almost no main meal entrees because people don't want to bring main entrees to a potluck because of money, dealing with keeping it warm, time etc
