Catering or potluck?

Futurebarber214, on December 8, 2016 at 6:22 PM

Im debating on whether to have my wedding catered or doing a potluck style wedding as far as the food is concerned? Has anyone had a potluck style wedding? Is it a good idea or a bad idea? I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

@Jess, I feel like someone who has had a professionally catering business, such as @Celia, is more informed than you regarding issues of food liability.

Catered. It's your wedding not a church potluck. Not to mention the food safety issues surrounding potlucks.

Catering is less stressful. Save the potluck for the family gathering.

No no no potluck! People can get sick from food as everyone isn't aware of health and safety regulations when it comes to dealing with food.

...cause I like Aunt Mary's hair in my heaping helping of her authentic whatever, and it makes it look like real catered food if the professional caterer is unprofessional enough to serve it. Free food for weddings and don't forget your cash envelopes and gifts!!!

I was going to post a similar question on here, but I knew I would get bashed up the wall..as have you are being right now..

I don't think potluck is a bad idea at all. My cousin had a potluck wedding and it was AMAZING! Every guest didnt bring food obviously but her close family did. Like mom, aunt, grandma, his mom, his cousin, his sister.. It was an amazing wedding. I plan on having a half potluck, we are serving the main meat and others are bringing the sides. Catering is expensive..why waste money like that when theres people willing to help me with the food?

If your style wedding is appropriate for a pot luck.. GO FOR IT! We are having a backyard BBQ style wedding!

I don't think catering should be lumped into the "money I wasted" category. You can say you wasted money on favors no one took. You wasted money on programs that no one really looked at. You cannot say you wasted money on feeding your guests food that is professionally prepared and will not give them food poisoning

You can't be serious, Shalon: "why waste money like that when theres people willing to help me with the food?"

How about the words "self respect"? You'll let your guests "waste money" -- that's how you classify the dollars spent on feeding your guests -- stocking your wedding with food? Why should they waste their money, but you get the gifts?

In what world does this logic fly?

I wouldn't want to eat food from a pot luck style reception

Catering. Pay someone to put the food together for you. Les stress. Plus you don't want any of your guests to have to work on your day.

My family has lots of good cooks. I'd just rather they attend as a guest and not worry about cooking.
