I was trying to keep my whole budget under $5000 that includes dress, decorations, food, photography everything. I am afraid I won't ever get married because of the cost. But I don't think I should have to go without a wedding and just go to the courthouse.

If $40 pp includes alcohol, I would book it now. That's an awesome price. My caterer and I had to work together and go back and forth because originally for a plated meal it was $36 pp and $34 pp for buffet without alcohol. Including alcohol we were looking at just under $50 pp. We only have 50 guests and we're trying to keep our budget low. When we thought about it, our guests are not big fancy meal or sit down type people so working with the caterer we came up with a heavy hors d'oeuvres menu. It includes 8 different hors d'oeuvres, some passed, some set up at $20 pp. With alcohol included, we're at just about $36 pp.

Really if you think about it, you can't go out to dinner any where without spending at least $20 pp even without alcohol. You are providing your guests with a dinner out basically. I suggest working with your caterer to come up with different options, cutting your guest list or trying to save more money. You have plenty of time to come up with extra money for catering.

I'm paying $75pp for food and alcohol. And that's a good price. Other places I was looking were $80-120pp WITHOUT the alcohol.

I'm with everyone look for more options. I found my caterer from thumbtack.com and she is charging us $12 per person but it doesn't include alcohol! we're going to end up paying probably about $10 a person for alcohol (just beer and wine) so that's $22 per person right there for cheap!

Dunno about St Louis, but here in inland NorCal the cheapest I've found was about $27 per person and I was not impressed with that caterer.

If you're looking for ways to cut your budget, our major money-saver is that we've cut our guest list to under 20. Because we've got such a small group, we'll be able to just have the whole thing in our caterer's 40-person-capacity restaurant, which besides being a fantastic deal on its own means we won't need a DJ or a rented PA system and it costs very little to decorate -- reuse ceremony flowers for centerpieces and voila, we're done. We're also spending less on paper, and having a tiny group makes our DIY favors a lot easier -- I'm just taking appropriately-colored yarn I have lying around the house and crocheting yarmulkes for everyone, so it doesn't cost me anything but my time.

I was quoted by one caterer at $125 per person. $40 a head doesn't sound unreasonable to me!!

40 is affordable. The venue I'm interested in started showing me packages that were 70 -90 per person (depending on day, time, meal options and plated vs buffet) So 40 pp is a deal
