Catering Tip

Jessica, on February 12, 2020 at 10:43 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 6

We are catering through Buca di Beppo and the total for catering 220 people is costing around $3,500.

Typically when I tip at a restaurant, I tip about 20%. If the service is really good. If not, maybe 10%-15%.

Wondering how much to tip for a catering order. If the order is $3,500, the tip would be $700!

I just think that is way too much. How much money to tip catering order that large? 10% is $350. They are not serving the food. Only doing set up. Is there a cap on these sorts of things? Like a cap of $200? We are already paying the delivery fee. The delivery fee and tax is included in the $3,500 total.

Any advice is appreciated! I don't want to be cheap, but don't want to be broke either. LOL.

I think you are on the right path. Seems like $700 is way too much since they are not serving the food only set up which makes a big difference. I would say 10% would be good.

Check your contract. Because usually gratuity is included in the contract. I know for my venue there’s a 28% fee that goes on to whatever charge for the food. That is 8% sales tax, 20% gratuity/admin fee. Usually with that included you aren’t required to give an additional tip unless you really want to. But what you have calculated seems about right if you’re wanting to give a separate tip

If they’re just setting up I’d give each person $10-15 in cash and that’d be that

Double check your contract because ours was added in but wasn't verbally mentioned that it would be. I am pretty careful about contracts so I read everything. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known and tipped again.

I've been wondering this as well. Our food is $3596, tax is $329.70, and we have to pay the servers separately which will be $210. They aren't serving; just maintaining lines and waiting tables. The catering company said the tip is up to us. I didn't know if 15%-20% was expected in addition to the tips we give the 3 waitstaff they're supplying...

I would definitely double check the contract! Some caterers include it & others do not. I feel like $3500 is really cheap for that amount of people though, so I would assume it is not included? My uncle just got married & they only had about 100 people & theirs also costed $3500.

We did 2 tastings this week & the first caterer included gratuity in the price & it was 12%. A few other places we got quotes from were 18% to 20%. The tasting we went to tonight did not include the gratuity & said it was totally up to us!

15% seems to be the average. I would double check your contract & if it doesn't say, you could always call & ask to be sure!
