Good morning Ladies,

I wanted to get your opinion about food. My wedding will be at a theatre and the reception will be in the basement of the theatre (it’s a really elegant space) and the theme is “Red roses” so there will be candles and red rose petals. Would having smoked bbq chicken and brisket look odd in comparison?

I think it really depends on how formal the wedding is because I wouldn't consider BBQ or brisket a food that would be served at a formal wedding.

I agree. The food should reflect the formality of the event. BBQ would be perfect for a laid back, informal event.

Agree with the others. How formal is it? How are the center pieces?

Food matching the event space is one of those guidelines that I don't think is a huge deal, but if you want to maintain a cohesive, elegant feel for the event, you may want to consider other options.

For an elegant space, I would expect passed appetizers and an upscale meal, but as a guest I'm just happy to eat.

We went to a more casual wedding last year and they had a BBQ buffet and it was delicious.

You mentioned that it’s an “elegant space”. So to me, brisket and bbq chicken evokes a casual feeling and not one of elegance.

While others may disagree, serve whatever is delicious that your guests will eat anyday over fancy just to be fancy. Many caterers (and people in general thinking about wedding food) would associate your venue type with the ideal menu being a 12" dinner plate with 2 bites total of random expensive cut meat with an unpronounceable sauce and a single baby carrot and lime wedge stacked on top being the entire meal to fill them up with unlimited open bar for x number of hours. That won't work for "real people" and your guests will go home drunk, starved and not happy. So serve delicious filling food..doesn't matter what type.

You can serve bbq and still have it plated elegantly - as long as it looks nice and not so messy I think you’re good.

These will be the centerpieces 😊
And I would consider it more semi-formal not “formal formal”.

Thank you! And yes it’s not your typical BBQ food, I believe that it’s a good common ground between yummy bbq and elegance.

Those are awesome! I think you’ll be fine. It’s not like your serving food on paper plates!

I mean, I'm in theatre, so it doesn't matter how elegant the theatre is, I associate the space with mozz sticks and pizza and diner food and feed your actors, please, we're starving artists, quite literally.

As someone who doesn't eat a lot of meat, I'd just ask that you have some kind of meal option for those who don't mind vegetarian.

That's my exact centerpiece but I have 3 diff heights on each table. And yes I'm doing bbq themed dinner with choice of 2 fried chicken, grilled chicken or pulled pork. We're leaning towards pulled pork and grilled chicken. Our venue is a country club so elegant but our folks want lots and love bbq.

Maybe if this is your future hubby's must have you could do like a plated prime rib/ brisket.
