Catering

Sydney, on February 15, 2022 at 1:23 PM Posted in Planning 6 12
So found a catering company that does not do tastings just because they are “not a restaurant”. However I was able to ask the lady to cater for two so I could do a tasting. Their menu looks really good you get two entrées, one starch, one side, a grazing table with pepperoni, salami, two dips, and fruit along with drinks. I was sketched out at first with the no tasting thing, but we agreed to meet her at her home. She is very sweet. The only bad review was from 2014 about not having enough and they believed the desserts were store bought. They commented that everything was homemade, but the lady leaving the bad review insisted that it was not and that they did not get the desserts they wanted. They do not have many reviews on Facebook or anywhere really. I’m scared that if I go with them, I will not have enough for my family and friends (56 people). They offer a little more than the company I was originally looking at. Dessert does not come with it. I’m sure it’ll be another charge. What should I do ladies?

I would start with the tasting- it's always a red flag when catering companies do not do a tasting. I understand they are "not a restaurant" however when I am spending thousands on food I want to know what I am getting! Ours charged us 50.00 to taste but credited back to us when we booked.

If you like it I would then take a look at the contract and make sure its suitable for both of you. You could always add extra food into your guest count if you are worried about not having enough.

I've never heard of caterers not doing tasting, either it was free or you had to pay for it but you still got to taste the food. Sounds sketchy to me still. Definitely add to you guest count to insure you have enough if you decide to go with them. I would also be looking around just incase.

Right! Not only do they do catering, but they also do wedding planning and design. But I’ve seen like five reviews so far. Only one negative, but still a little sketched. Kinda sad because that’s the best menu I’ve seen from ANYWHERE. oh yea, I forgot to mention. It’s 25 a person for everything I listed.

Not a lot of reviews is a red flag for me, especially in wedding planning because most places will have tons of reviews on their website or on apps. Not having a tasting is another red flag. Why not do a tasting? Even if you aren’t a restaurant it is pretty standard to do a tasting. Places that do multiple services that are not cohesive also send major red flags for me. Like planning, design and catering are all major aspects of an event and are usually handled by separate companies because they are so involved and detail oriented (or maybe that’s just the way I see it 🤷🏽‍♀️) It would make me nervous that there are no amazing reviews about their planning services or their other services. Honestly don’t choose a vendor just because they’re cheap. They may advertise everything you want but it might not be worth the savings if it’s all going to be mediocre or less.

Right! They had some good reviews with pictures posted. Their grazing tables look awesome, but then again I don’t want to chance paying a crap ton of money and not getting what I pay for. They set up really cute in some photos, but that one review (since there aren’t many) threw me off. I did see one from two months ago where they catered a rehearsal and did great but usually at a rehearsal there are less people to feed. She offered for me to come to her house and pay for a tasting (I asked if she could cater for two people- my partner and I to just try the food) they also have rental booklets with cute lanterns and such (I was going to rent from them even if they didn’t cater my wedding)

These are really the only pictures I see other than a table full of tiny cheesecake plates

They said the reason they do not do dessert (they will add if asked but it’s not on the 25$ per person menu—which is the only menus) is because of the wedding cake being dessert usually.

These all sound like huge red flags, I would explore other options.

I agree! If there are only a handful of reviews spanning the last 8 years, I would assume this company does not have a lot of experience. While the set-up looks cute in the photos, it appears intended for a much smaller crowd and leaves me questioning their experience working larger events.
