Has anyone recently filed for a catholic annulment and if so, how long did the process take for you? My FH was previously married and he filed for the annulment this past January. According to the church it didn't officially start processing until March but each time he calls for an update they are unable to provide one. I'm anxiously awaiting so we can start planning our wedding. My understanding is that you really shouldn't even pick a reception place until the annulment goes through.

Divorced Catholics that have not received an annulment can receive the Eucharist. The annulment only has to do with whether or not they can get married within the church. Being divorced you can still receive the sacraments of communion and confession.

My husband went through the annulment process. It took about 8-9 months. The Vatican sped up the process by eliminated the court of second instance, which went into effect last December. From my husband's experience, what can take the longest is answering all of the questions that goes with the annulment. These are essay questions and require a lot of soul searching and being completely honest with what happened within the marriage. From there, the interview process of the witnesses was no big deal. It was 30-60 minutes of their time. After all of that, it gets reviewed by the diocese. Depending on what's on the schedule, this can be another point where it can take time.

My advice is to get an advocate. This would be either a priest or a deacon that can be the point person with the diocese. My husband had this and it totally helped move the process along. So much so that the priest that helped us out was the one that married us.

I would recommend waiting until the annulment has been approved before meeting with anyone at the church to start the pre-marital process. Once they find out your FH has been married before, they won't proceed until the annulment has been approved.

Also think carefully about putting any deposits down on vendors/venues before this process is completed.

    Best of luck!!

Really, when you see this all in black and white, doesn't it seem a little weird?

I am currently going through the Catholic Nullity myself. 10/6/16 will be one year since I filed. I was told about a month ago that there were two more steps and SHOULD have an answer in October. I can't chose a date until this is approved or denied. Basically they won't even discuss the actual wedding until the it approved. Celia, I agree with you in most of your comments, but this is FH's desire and because I love him, I'm going through it. Due to the stuff it has dredged up (about my past marriage) it has been a painful process.

This my first time posting on this, when I was 25, I had married a Jewish man in a Jewish wedding ceremony and never got permission to marry from the Catholic Church. I am Catholic and is going for a "Defect in Canonical Form Anullment". That type of anullment only requires copies of my baptism certificate, prior marriage and proof of civil divorce. It is a documentary case and is the fastest to process.

This is true. We filed for annulment last June, Fiance was grilled for two hours by Archbishop of Birmingham in November. Received notice that all evidence had been received and now we wait. Can't set a date, choose reception or plan a honeymoon. Very frustrating.
