Catholic components for a secular ceremony?

ColoradoBride, on June 7, 2017 at 5:02 AM Posted in Planning 1 14

Any recommendations for incorporating some Catholic tradition/reading/prayer/something into a secular wedding? I was raised Catholic and my FH is an atheist, we're having an outdoor ceremony in the mountains "officiated" by his uncle (thanks to Colorado law we can sign our marriage license ourselves and avoid having some random official officiant, however this means we're scripting our own ceremony). I know it would make my mom happy to have some nod to my religious upbringing incorporated into the ceremony but I'm not sure how. I've never been to a Catholic wedding so I have no reference for traditional readings or prayers and I've always found it sort of awkward to hear readings that mention God at a secular ceremony. I also don't want to do anything that shouldn't be done outside of a church or that would offend my Catholic family members

    I'm not sure how you can do that, if your officiant was endorsed online.

    Hi! I am in a very similar situation. Raised catholic but having a secular ceremony on the beach that I am writing. I am having my brother read the " love is patient, love is kind" passage from Corinthians, the Bible. It is a beautiful sentiment, does not outrightly mention God, but is a nod to our upbringing and hopefully will pacify grandparents.

    Good luck!!

    @Jacks: He isn't ordained or anything so he can't sign the marriage license, but we don't need him to.

    @Daniella D. That's a really good one!

    We also used Corinthians 13:4-8. DH BIL officiated for us as we also did not have church wedding. My grandmother said our blessing at dinner.

    Is it possible that you could ask a Catholic Priest what is ok to use outside of the church and what isn't? I believe they would be the ones who really could answer this without question.

    Or Google scriptures concerning love from the bible and choose which one you think is best for your overall situation. This can get tricky though because you also have to consider your husband's beliefs. Is he asking to incorporate anything from atheism? Because if he is that could definitely ruffle some feathers of your family.

    Typically in a Catholic ceremony there are three readings. One from the gospel, new testament old testament. Do see searching online to see which are typically used. I think readings would be the easiest way to incorporate it Smiley smile

    I am not a fan of the Corinthians reading, I think there are other readings more personally meaningful. Explore this site for some other options.

    You may also want a Catholic hymn. I love The Servant Song by David Haas.

    This article outlines the Catholic marriage rite. Maybe you can pick and chose some elements for your ceremony. Good luck!

    We are doing the 3 traditional reading, one will be the Corinthians one since it was used in my parents catholic wedding as well as my grandmothers.

    Ours will be outside the church but I am catholic, FH is nondenominational (used to be baptist)

    If you had a real officiant, they could navigate this for you. Sorry, but that's screaming true. I realize that you don't need one to be legal, but that's not ALL we do. We do stuff like this; how can we incorporate Hindu and Jewish traditions in the same ceremony? What can we do that is Catholic-like outside?

    My best suggestion is to include some scripture. Refer to the majesty of nature and the soaring cathedral of trees....stuff like that.

    We are doing three readings, one by our officiant and two by our friends that we asked to participate. We are also ending our ceremony with a prayer to Sts. Priscilla and Aquilla, Patron Saints of Married Couples.
