Catholic Priest For Outdoor Ceremony?

Raechelle, on June 13, 2017 at 10:55 AM Posted in Planning 1 24

Hi! Does anyone know if a Catholic priest can officiate an outdoor wedding? Also, any recommendations on who to contact in the Hudson Valley area would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I'm pretty sure a priest will only do a wedding in a church.

You will most likely not find any Catholic priest willing to do an outdoor ceremony. (getting married Catholic too)

Unless its on Holy or Church grounds Priests cannot officiate a Mass outside of a church. I would contact your parish priest and speak with him about it further.

Sorry Raechelle, it's against the rules of the Catholic church. I have an Uncle who is a priest who has done everything for me since my baptism and I had wanted him to perform the ceremony as he also did this for my parents. FH and I are getting married under a beautiful willow tree and while my uncle thought it was lovely, he told me his hands are effectively tied.

My priest actually told me that he could marry us outside of the church. But, he said its a lot of paperwork and can take years blah blah. You can ask and see what yours says, but its probably not worth the wait.

I live in western NY. My fiancé and I asked both of our priest and they both stated they would not conduct a wedding ceremony outside of the church. With that being said we are getting married in a church!

I have been to one outdoor Catholic officiated wedding. The couple had to petition the Bishop in the diocese two years in advance. They both were in very good standing in their respective churches, and were getting married by the childhood priest of the bride. They also did not find out until three months before their wedding if they could actually do it because that's how long it took for the Bishop to agree.

If you are not Catholic and your partner is, keep in mind getting married in the Catholic church means you vow your children will be raised Catholic. I am guessing you are not Catholic as you are unsure about how the sacrament of marriage works within the church

Mrs Fall Bride, he's ordained in the Catholic tradition, that's not the same as a Roman Catholic priest. Roman Catholic priests can't perform wedding ceremonies in other traditions, and that's what it seems Fr Clarke does.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Like everyone else has said, the Catholic Church believes sacramental marriages should take place in the Church.

We just went to a wedding this weekend. The bride and groom got married in the Church with just their parents the weekend before, then had a priest do an outdoor ceremony (no communion.). The priest even acknowledged during his homily that the only way he was able to officiate their ceremony outdoors was because they'd already gotten married in the Church.

Usually a catholic priest can only perform a ceremony in a house of worship. Miiiiight be able to get it to work if it's like in the backyard of the church.

You can get a dispensation to have a Catholic ceremony outside the church, like in a catering hall or other venue, if one of the couple is not Catholic. The ability to get this varies by Diocese. However, outside weddings are rarely approved, they need to be in a building.

    In most cases no.

There are a few exceptions with holy grounds and churches /convents/monasteries that may have outdoor sites approved.

Also be wary of any "priests for hire" who claim they can. It will likely be a legally valid marriage but would have to be convalidated in the church to be considered having received the sacrament.
