Catholic Wedding Organ Music?

Erin, on July 9, 2021 at 12:30 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 3
I realize this is a fairly niche question, lol. My fiance haven’t set a date or begun scheduling and planning with a church yet, but we are looking at a Catholic church that has a pretty traditional liturgy. We both are very traditional with church music (we don’t even really like piano in church lol we want all organ and singing) and so for our wedding music, we will want it to be pretty organ heavy. I know that when we get much further into wedding planning, that we will be discussing what music we want at whatever church we’re at. Does anyone have any really beautiful organ pieces you know that could be appropriate for different parts of the wedding, like before the wedding, after, during the processional, etc? I’m sure the church will be able to help us, but I’d like to get a feel for what’s out there!

I think you are going to have to just go by the church to be honest. My church gave me a small list of songs that I was able to choose from. Friends who got married in a different church had a much more extensive list.

My dad is a church organist so I’ve grown up with a lot of organ wedding music! Here are some of my suggestions! The church may not approve them all, depending on how conservative they are, but a lot of them should be OK.

Pre-ceremony (while guests are being seated):

    - Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach)

    - Air on a G String (Bach)

    - The Lord’s My Shepherd - the tune is called Crimond, it’s a hymn tune

    - Nimrod, from the Enigma Variations (Elgar)

    Processional:

    - Arrival of the Queen of Sheba (Handel) - this is what I walked down the aisle to!

    - Here Comes the Bride (Wagner, otherwise known as the Bridal March from Lohengrin)

    - Hornpipe from the Water Music (Handel)

    - Prince of Denmark’s March (Jeremiah Clarke, sometimes called Trumpet Voluntary)

    - Trumpet Tune (Purcell)

    - Te Deum (Charpentier)

    - Grand March from Aïda (Verdi)

    Exiting the church (recessional):

    - Wedding March from A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Mendelssohn) - we had this for our recessional

    - Toccata (Widor)

Most of the processional suggestions would work for the recessional as well.
