Catholic/hindu combined ceremony in Atlanta

Minola, on December 10, 2023 at 11:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 1

My fiance's family's religious background is Hindu and mine is Catholic. We ideally would like to have one combined ceremony with Catholic and Hindu elements to be respectful of our families' religious practices and to avoid having two separate ceremonies. My understanding is that the Catholic Church forbids performing marriage ceremonies outside of a Catholic Church and that this would make having a Catholic non-sacramental ceremony outside of a Catholic church virtually impossible.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and if so what did you do? Would a priest even provide a blessing at a combined ceremony? Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated!

I would talk to your priest. The church does allow for ceremonies outside of the church in certain circumstances (like when it's a wedding between a Jewish person and a Catholic person), and I would think that since you are marrying a non-Christian, that you would be able to make a case for having your ceremony at a "neutral" site. But you do have to get special dispensation from the bishop to do so. As for the priest being able to do a blessing, I think it depends on what you were envisioning for a combined ceremony, so again, just talk to your priest. He will be much more able to help you understand what you can do.
