Celebration of Marriage

Daniel, on September 22, 2023 at 11:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

A couple of friends have asked me to "officiate" their wedding. They got married a few weeks ago at the Justice of the Peace and they are wanting to have a ceremony for family and friends. I am not ordained and they're not asking me to be, just lead a ceremony where they can say vows in front of their family and friends. I have not talked to them about what they actually want included yet. I'm just trying to find ideas of a script of what to say for them to everyone who will be in attendance. What questions do i need to ask them. I want to do a good job for them and not make them regret they asked me. I have never done anything like this before. The bride i have known for a little over 20 years, she is now in her mid 30's. The groom I have known for a little over 2 years and a little older than her.

Can you help me?

Definitely check out either Pinterest or Google (or both) for ceremony script ideas. You take take pieces of multiple scripts that you find, and/or you can write your own. Check with the bride and groom about what they envision for their ceremony (are they looking to do any unity ceremonies? Readings? Special traditions?), and make sure to look for scripts that are related to those.

My personal opinion, your friend the bride should create the wedding script and then send it to you for edits/additions/personal touches. I'm literally doing this. I'm the bride and we are getting close friends to marry us. Our state has weird laws so basically friends can't marry you. So we are getting married before. So our friends don't need to be ordained either. I made the wedding script and sent it to my friend. She made some lovely suggestions and additions and sent it back to me. I think it's a big ask for you to create the whole wedding script.

Thank you for your idea. I will talk to them both about what they want to do.

I wrote the script for my own wedding ceremony, so I totally understand how overwhelming it is at first! What helped me was searching just for one piece at a time, rather than scripts for the entire ceremony. I first put together a list of the different sections that we wanted to include, and then I'd look up script ideas for each individual section. So I'd look on Pinterest for something like, "Declaration of Intent wedding ceremony script" or "ring exchange script", and then I'd save the ones I liked best. From there, I'd piece together the entire script.
