Cell phones to capture ceremony help?

Kristen, on September 23, 2020 at 10:14 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 10

Has anyone used a cell phone on a tripod in lieu of a videographer (long story short we cannot agree on having one and truthfully not money I probably need to spend right now ha ha) for their ceremony? For a short ceremony I just at least want to record the entrances and the ceremony itself to share with close friends and family later. I was thinking to have it placed near the officiant from behind so everything can be captured. Has anyone done this and can give tips?

My friend tried this at her wedding and streamed it via Facebook. None of us at home could hear anything that was spoken from the officiant or the bride and groom. Bit disappointing.

It won't be for live streaming. I know it won't be close to what a videographer can capture but that idea is out so unless I just do not do it at all ha ha.

If you're going to go the cellphone route (and I understand why you would), I'd try to have someone manning the phone & tripod. It's too hard to predict EXACTLY what spot will have an unobstructed view. You don't want it all set up and then realize it was focused on FH's back the entire time because he stepped in front of it or the officiant took one small step toward you & FH and he blocked it. And, as Kimberly said, unless you're all wearing microphones, it might not pick up the sound you want. If you haven't yet, try looking on Thumbtack. Daughter made the decision fairly last minute to add one and decided to give Thumbtack a try. She quickly found an available videographer who charged $100 per hour to film and that included all raw footage. They also offered highlight videos as an option. She ended up spending about $1500 on 7 hours of filming and a highlight video, but in that kind of a set up you might be able to get just an hour or two of filming pretty inexpensively. Otherwise, I'd ask a friend or family member to film it with their phone. Good luck! Smiley heart

Yeah I was thinking to ask my friend's hubby but since he is a guest I feel bad asking him ya know? Yeah I know camera and tripod is not the best. I can find a cheap videographer I know that. FH is just adamant that he does not want one. The only thing I can think of is that due to his social anxiety he does not want another person there. I considered even splurging to get a good quality one but I have tried and he immediately is like no.

You could probably hire someone off of thumbtack for pretty cheap to do this for you. Just remember that if you put it behind the officiant and no one moves it it will be in all of your photos.

It is not price. He does not want another person there lol. It sounds like the cell phone idea won't work so maybe I will just scrap it all together.

If having your ceremony filmed is important to you, I would hire someone. Having your ceremony captured is much more important that “having another person there”.

It's not so much a matter of finding someone cheap, it's not a matter of having a professional person that's what I want my problem is that my fiance does not and anytime I bought it up he's kind of shut the idea down. So the issue was that I want one there and he doesn't so I was just thinking maybe a cell phone would at least capture something but honestly it sounds like from what everyone is saying is that it's not going to really be effective so I'm thinking just scrap the idea altogether.

I didn't use a cell phone but a digital camera. We set it on a tripod at the back of the church and my brother hit record right before the ceremony started and after it was over. It is a little hard to hear because the church is so big but they didn't set up microphones because our wedding was so small. Its perfect for us and it only cost me a pack of batteries and a new memory card (didn't want to risk running out of space).
