Centerpieces: Ostrich Feathers or Flowers??

S&J, on March 3, 2016 at 4:35 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 24

The venue we booked with requires that we use one of their three preferred florists/event decorators for our wedding. I'm meeting with the first one in about a month, so I'm trying to gather photo inspiration. My vision for my wedding is a modern take on the Harlem Renaissance. I love the way ostrich feathers look in Pinterest photos for centerpieces. I wanted some opinions for people who have seen them at weddings or actually used them. Did it look tacky? Was it a DIY that should have been forgotten? Are flowers just best? Any perspective would be great

    I think done right, they would really complement your 1920s theme!

    Feathers weird me out. They can be beautiful, but I'd go with flowers if those are the only options. I'm with Richard on height. It really bothers me when I can't converse across the table because of the (probably very beautiful) centerpieces. Individual taste.

    I am doing feathers in tall gold vases with hydrangea floral wreaths at the bottom. They look REALLY great and elegant when kept to one color. I say go for it, you won't be disappointed

    There's nothing wrong with an ostrich feather centerpiece. They're unique, catch the eye, and really aren't a bargain basement option. While I obviously prefer real flowers, I like the look of a well constructed ostrich feather centerpiece. I remember the centerpieces done by one of our WW brides, the sassy and classy, Rosemary. Her pieces were very lovely.

    ETA: As in...half of the centerpieces are made of feathers, and half of them are made of flowers.

    I vote for a half and half -- half feathers (because I think you really love the look) and half flowers (because real flowers are gorgeous). Hopefully, Rosemary will see this thread and add her opinion to the thread.

    First, I love your theme. Feather centerpieces are so pretty. I also agree with other posters, half and half would look great.

    I pick feathers! But that's because I'm doing them too ha ha

    MoSunshine where did you get/are you getting the gold vases? I wanted to do that but haven't found what I'm looking for in gold so if you could link me or tell me what to search I'd love to see them!

    @annakay511: I think so too. Im trying to mix it with a modern flare so I'm thinking adding flowers to it will do just that.

    @Brooke: I do too. Looking on Pinterest they range from glamorous to DIY gone wrong. I had never seen any at an actual wedding I went to so I'm curious.

    @NenaBear: that makes perfect sense. Maybe I can do a mix of high and lows

    @Mo: I love that idea!!!

    @Centerpiece: thanks for giving your professional advice. I was hoping you would comment on this thread. I'm definitely leaning toward the mix. Fingers crossed that it is in my budget.

    What if you alternated? Every other table has the ostrich feathers and the other tables have flowers? I really like the look but depending on how many tables you end up having it might be too much?

    Rosemary: If you see this, where'd you get the feathers and did you use a particular tutorial? So far what I've priced out is a lot more than $15 each so I wanted to know what you did!
