Centerpieces - Renting vs. DIY'ing

Jillian, on February 3, 2011 at 3:05 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 6

I just wanted to get some feedback on personal experience or general knowledge. I'm going back and forth with either DIY or renting centerpieces. I'm doing something simplistic - submerged calla lily with crystal rocks and an LED light on the bottom and a floating candle. Do you think it's more economically sound and less stress to rent or DIY?

I know that I don't want to deal with setting them all up at the venue and then having to figure out who's going to take what home, yet I'm not sure what the price difference would be if we just rented and didn't have to deal with set-up/take down.

Thoughts?

What do you mean by renting? Does your venue 'rent' out centerpieces? Or do you mean hiring a florist to put them together for you?

I did submerged flower centerpieces for my wedding. As part of my package, the venue provided the vases and mirrors they sat on (they also had the flower 'frogs' that held the flower down in the water so it wouldn't float to the top). I purchased light colored river rocks from the 99 cent store and purchased floating candles online. Then I paid the florist to deliver/set up the center pieces. Since submerged flower centerpieces have to be assembled on site, and like you said, you don't want to worry about coordinating who sets them up, I'd pay someone (like your florist) to set them up for you.

You may be able to rent the vases and rocks from your florist. From my pricing, it wasn't cheaper. The good thing is then you wouldn't have to do the work of assemblying them.

The lights you will have to purchase- regardless of who does the centerpieces. save-on-crafts.com has the cheapest aquabrites, and they last 12 hours. But I wouldn't do lighted with candles... I think it would clash. Pick one or the other.

Difficult question. You will save money on renting the glass vases (what would you do with them afterwards?) and then creating the look yourself.....but you must consider who will be doing them the day of. It will take time to create each one and light the floating candles before guests enter the reception. Also to take care of the cleanup and returning the rented vases.

Do you have a day-of-coordinator? If not this is the perfect answer! It is their job to set that all up for you as well as everything else going on the day of your wedding. I highly suggest it and the price is worth saved stress. You will also be able to cut corners such as DIY centerpieces.

Good luck! Submerging flowers is a beatuiful and very modern trend right now.

Just another consideration (in favor of renting) you are actually charged a fee (insurance) in case something gets damaged. So don't worry about that so much. The other thing is that if you get a full service decor company to handle it, they will set it up and break it down so you have very little to worry about. You can even have them do a mock up for you to make sure it will look exactly like you envision!
