Ceremony Soloist

Kimi, on November 19, 2015 at 12:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

Who had a soloist? What did they sing? Were they family/friend or hired? I keep going back and forth on this. My aunt has a beautiful voice and has sung in church for years, as well as a few weddings. I don't know if I should ask her or not. I'm also not a big fan of the traditional songs that are sung during weddings, so I don't know what I would ask her to sing. We are having my future step-son play "All You Need Is Love" on his violin. Also having one more song played after our vows (which I don't think my aunt has the range for). Would adding one more song be too much? I do not want an in an out, everything over in 20 minutes ceremony, but I also don't want it so long that people are getting restless and cranky about it.

A friend sang "I'll Still Be Loving You" by Restless Hearts (it was 1987) in the middle of our ceremony. It was so awkward standing there just looking at each other while she sang! Longest 3 minutes of our lives.

She also sang it as our first dance and that was fine.

To be fair - both my parents are Presbyterian pastors and my dad swears that the perfect ceremony length is 26 minutes Smiley smile I'm with @Nancy T - during solos all you do is stare at your FH/FW or look at the soloist and it can feel very awkward. Since you already have 2 songs I think you'll be good!

How many readings are you having?

If you want a soloist, how about they sing while you sign the wedding licence.

During my ceremony we had a friend who plays piano do all the music. The enterance song, then he played a song while we signed the wedding licence towards the end of the ceremony, then played the recessional music.

Having music during that time that you and your husband step aside to sign the paper work is a great way to keep the flow going. It gives something your guests to listen to and then you can include a family member singing or playing music.

Great idea A&G! I hadn't even thought of that.

We are having close friend who is also a professional musician playing for us. He's going to do Beauty and the Beast for the processional, All of Me for my walk down, and Don't Stop Believing for the recessional. He plays acoustic guitar beautifully. I think it's the part of the wedding that I am most excited about. I'm not a fan of vocals during the ceremony, I just don't think it fits. How about having your son play during the processional so that there isn't a lot of just sitting around time?

Awkward during. Possibly before, for the processional or after, but during? It never quite works.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I'm going to skip asking my aunt to sing. Also, that would be two more people at the RD. I'm going to take A&G's suggestion and having the other song be played while we sign our marriage certificate.
