Chair dilemma

FiannaNotFiona, on March 17, 2022 at 10:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

Hi! We've still got a ways to go before our big day but as I've started putting together the list of smaller details for our budget, I came across a dilemma with our chair situation.

Our venue offers Chiavari Chairs in a "natural" color which we could make work but they don't fit into our color scheme exactly how we envisioned so we looked around at the venue's recommended rental company to price out different colored chair options. When I looked into renting gold Chiavari Chairs, the rental company had a note about the weight limit of these chairs (~250 lbs). Since my step-dad is a bit on the heavier side, I don't want to cause any concerns with using these chairs so we looked at some other options with the rental company that support more weight (up to 500 lbs).

The issue is that to rent Chiavari Chairs, it would be $8.95/chair but the ones with the higher weight limit is $18.50/chair!

I have no issue spending the ~$9/chair to upgrade to the gold Chiavari Chairs to match our colors but I can't imagine it would be acceptable to have 1 different chair designated for my step-dad since it would be blatantly obvious that it's due to his weight.

The option would be to upgrade all the chairs to the heavier weight limit but the price difference for the total would be about $1000 for the Chiavari Chairs vs. over $2200 for the sturdier chairs.

I really cannot imagine spending over $2K on chairs, but don't want to risk anything happening by sticking with less sturdy chairs. I also don't want to single out my step-dad and give him a "special" chair when everyone else would have matching chairs.

Does it look like I'll just have to suck up the major expense for the upgraded chairs and adjust the rest of our budget elsewhere to make up for it? Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated!

Why don't you get a handful of the more expensive chairs and dot them throughout, making sure some super tiny guests get them too, so it doesn't look so pointed?

If you really want them all to match, I'd stick with the original chairs you'd be getting for free - if they're not exactly what you want I wouldn't want to pay $2k for the sturdier ones, and like you, I also wouldn't want to risk someone breaking a chair and injuring themselves for the aesthetic with the ones you prefer the look of.

I can assure you that no one will notice whether or not your chairs match your color scheme and would not pay for upgrade.

I personally think it’s quite silly to pay for chairs when you’re getting some for free. No one will notice or pay attention. I can’t tell you what any of the chairs at any wedding I’ve attended looked like or what color they were. No one is paying attention. If you must change them then I would suggest doing something like Rosie mentioned above

I don't think anyone will care about chairs. You might be stuck in the wedding planning spiral, lol. Love the thoughtfulness toward your Stepdad though!

I remember having this same thought about chairs, but I realized the guests won’t pay attention to the chairs and opted to use the ones that were included in the price. However, if it’s important to you to change the chairs, how about purchasing a limited amount of the sturdier chairs for your “front row” guests/tables (parents, grandparents, wedding participants, etc.) so you have the special chairs and your stepdad gets the sturdier one without being singled out.

I was thinking this as well. Immediate family could get the upgraded chairs so it looks like it's just a "VIP chair" rather than a weight thing.

My colors are pastels and white but our venue has dark brown chairs. It's not what I would choose, but I realized early that no one cares and it won't ruin the other décor.

Are the venue's chiavari chairs sturdier than the one's you'd be renting? Because if not, you'd be running into a similar issue with the ones that you'd be getting for free. If they're sturdy enough, I'd honestly say stick with the free ones and use your money elsewhere, guests will not notice chairs, in fact most guests know that chairs arent really something you can control too much. They'll just care if they have a place to sit at all. If they aren't, I would do what Sharonda suggested, in renting a limited amount of the sturdier chairs for your VIP guests aka the family tables and then the free ones everywhere else.

Just chiming in with chairs CAN make a huge difference in the overall look of the wedding. We rented different chairs purely for aesthetic and it 10000% was worth it!
Anyway, like others mentioned, I would personally get the sturdier chairs for VIPs. So just the head table (or whatever version of that you're doing!)

Unrelated: But thanks for pointing this out. My venue offers free chiavari chairs and my husband and most of his family is definitely over 250lbs. I'll have to ask them about it.

The ones that come with the venue have the smaller weight limit which is part of the concern.

The upgraded ones are very different than the free ones so they’d definitely look out of place

The issue isn’t about paying to upgrade necessarily just for looks but because the ones included in our venue have a weight limit that some of our guests exceed and I don’t want to risk any incidents

The free chairs are the same weight limit so that’s what my dilemma was…I guess a lot of people were confused and just thought I was asking about just upgrading but it was more focused on the fact that my options were limited due to weight limits. But yes, I like the idea of maybe just doing the VIP tables with the upgraded chairs!

Thank you! I do like this idea and think that this would be a good compromise!

I spoke with my mom earlier and she agreed that we couldn’t risk the chance of a chair breaking so we had to use an upgraded chair somehow but just didn’t want to single anyone out so this might be a good compromise, thank you!

I meant, mix them with other paid ones which are similar, rather than the free ones (assuming they go better together than the free ones). But mismatched chairs can look cool, if you like that vibe!

Ah yeah, unfortunately, they're all vastly so different and my fiancé and I both don't like the look of mixing them together.

For now, we're keeping our options open to other rental companies to see if anything pops up but we've got time to sort it out
