Chalkboard Signs - Cleaning Question

BeachBride2016, on September 13, 2016 at 9:47 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 8

I received several small chalkboard signs from a friend's sister that were used at her wedding that we'll use for our wedding, plus a large chalkboard that we'll use for our seating chart. All items have things already written on them in chalkboard pen. Is the best way to get rid of the writing to just chalkboard paint over them, or is there an easy way to get the chalkboard pen off without having to go the paint route? Any tips/tricks from those that have repurposed chalkboard signs is much appreciated - I'm craft/creative but I don't do it too often so my skills are forever rusty.

Depending on the board, you may have to paint...i have a board that was sprayed with chalkboard paint and it keeps an outline of anything written with chalk. But I've done others where water washed it off.

I've always repainted using chalkboard spray paint. I would like to know of any tips/tricks for just removing the chalkboard pen.

I've read windex wipes work pretty well. The chalk pen I used on mine came off with a damp wash cloth whenever I made a mistake on it

I use a general Windex house clear on the ones I keep around the house (for notes to each other or sweet messages). I have not had any problems with visibility.

The chalk pens I am using come off just by wiping with a damp cloth. If that won't work and neither will windex, you might just use chalk paint to make a fresh clean board for yourself

Ok, I will definitely try the Windex to see if that works before I do a full re-paint. Thank you!

We used a Magic Eraser on mine. It took most of it off and the ones that it didn't completely remove, we painted over.

Magic Eraser and vinegar. Trust me, I just had to do this yesterday and it worked like a charm. A tiny bit of black came off but not that you'd be able to notice.
