Chalkboard Signs-DIY? Rent? What's your experience?

L + A, on June 4, 2014 at 2:13 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

Hey!

FH and I are looking at doing some chalkboard signs for the wedding, and we're debating on DIY-ing it, or renting it? The rental companies we can rent from are $10 for the easel, $10 for the chalkboard, or $12 and $15 each for slightly bigger ones. I'd like to rent them if I could so I can give them back, but I feel like DIY is cheaper but how time consuming and how crafty do you actually have to be? Honest opinions please. Anyone have experience with a printing/computer system, or chalkboard markers, or anything else they'd like to share? Thank you Smiley smile

I bought small chalkboard easels for about $3.50 at Wal Mart and a chalkboard marker for about $3and just wrote the signs out myself. Never even thought of renting them.

I'm a HUGE vote for DIY. I made mine and I'm thrilled with the results. (see photos) Did it all for under $25. Also, because it's computer printed, I don't have to stress about the signs getting smudged.

Took some serious time on the computer. But it was totally worth it.

Oregan - how did you get the background to look like a chalkboard? I would love to print my own but figured I would need to buy them pre-designed and just print them but maybe I'm wrong.

@ she's country. You can download hi-res images online. There are lots to choose from if you google "chalkboard background." Here are a few:

Then just upload them to picture editing software (picmonkey, photoshop, picasa) and add text!

I did DIY chalk board table number and signs. I purchased picture frames from the dollar store (they have an entire row!) disassembled them and painted the glass with chalkboard paint! From start to complete finish it took less then 3 hours and I now have 20 table numbers and 4 larger signs to use!

DIY makes you feel better about your hard work. We made a custom wood sign, it took quite a bit of time because of staining numerous coats, and then using the chalkboard paint. After all was said and done, it probably would have cost about the same (If you factor in time and materials). Unless you can get materials from others that are free. We got the chalkboard spray paint at Walmart for like 3.50. It was almost 8 bucks at Michaels.

I am all for DIYing stuff. You could get some frames, and chalkboard pieces at Micheals real cheap. Than super glue the chalkboards into the frames and get a fancy marker pen to write on them with. Plus, if you have some extra $ to throw around spray-paint the frames to fit you color scheme. Sounds like alot of work, but it will pay off in the end.

This might sound bad lol but what is a chalk marker?? A couple of you have mentioned that! I appreciate all the comments, Brian you make a great point that the hard work will pay off in the end. Sounds like Michael's is the place to get all this stuff? I like the idea of spray painting the frames, that's awesome! Is there a particular brand anyone is fond of for spray paint?
