Chalkboards anyone?

Megan, on March 7, 2013 at 4:07 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 27

Who else is doing chalkboards at their wedding? I have have two white wooden frames and the stands for them to go on so far...

Questions:

-What are you using for the chalkboard? I was thinking masonite board?

-DIY Chalkboard paint or store bought? Wondering if its even worth trying, leaning towards buying it...

-Anyone have experience with this project? Tips?

Also, I found this on pinterest... The lost art of chalkboard hand lettering

We have a chalkboard for table numbers, but aren't using actual chalkboard. We are using black paper....it looks like a chalkboard and only costs $2 a yard at the craft store. We are writing on it with chalk and putting it in a frame with no glass. Got the frame at Salvation Army for $15, probably because the painting in it was so hideous!! This will save time and money. If we mess up writing, no big deal. They also make chalkboard Contact Paper. Here are some links for what I'm talking about.

I'm thinking maybe paper or black mat board and paint too... that could be easier for me but not sure it'll create the look I'm going for

I used chalkboard paint for table numbers, my photo booth sign, photobooth props, giant Patron bottles, and even my card box. I had a ton left from when I bought it to paint my sons bedroom so I figured I'd use it for whatever I could!! I have used it on alot of different things since I bought it, Glasses, cardboard, walls, cookie sheets, mirrors. Haha. maybe alittle overboard!!

I am going to use chalkboard paint because I know that I will have a use for it in the future I plan on putting it in the baby's room when we have a child. I am writing on them with chalkboard pens that I found at fred Meyers but I bet staples or amazon.com has them as well I feel like its easier than using real chalk and I hate the sound of real chalk

You can also sharpen a regular piece of chalk with a sharpener. Its a little messy while sharpening but it makes it easier to write with!

My parents painted a "half wall" in their kitchen with chalkboard paint. It was an island that the Stove was on and the other side was the grandkid's art studio. It works great but doesn't erase as well as normal chalkboard. Be prepared to clean it with a damp rag instead of a eraser. Other than that works like a charm!

There's a product called liquid chalk. It comes in all sorts of neon colours and white. You can use it on any black writing surface (chalkboard, foam core, bristol board etc). It comes off of chalkboard with a damp rag and the plus side is that you won't have the lovely finger smudges from everyone testing to "see if its real chalk" or erasing your messages. They aren't cheap but not too expensive either. I wil be doing chalkboards too.

I have done a few chalkboard projects. I used chalkboard spray paint and chalk pens. This board was on an old whiteboard that I converted into a chalkboard with the spray paint. I also converted some old canvases and used some foam board. I have seen black foam board at hobby lobby and michaels - they would pass for chalkboards (but you would need to use chalk pens probably.)

One thing to think about when using chalk pens is that on more porous materials they don't come off (even with water) - so you would have to be okay with either throwing away the sign after, or re-painting it. The chalk pens came off fine on the converted whiteboards though.

For the lettering, I cheated on some (the one pictured) and printed out the words on the computer, traced over it onto the board with a ballpoint pen, then followed the indents made with the chalk pen.

    Good luck!
