Champagne only cocktail hour?

Maui K, on September 30, 2016 at 6:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

Sorry, it's my second post today!

Would it seem tacky to do a champagne-only cocktail hour? Then have a full, open bar for the reception?

But the name is a cocktail hour so I think there should be cocktails! Right? I'm trying to save money and having only champagne at the 1-hour cocktail hour would save me $500. But if it's tacky then I'll just have the full bar open.

I'm having full open bar but if you're trying to save money then why not just do champagne and like a option of two hors d'oeuvres?

That would be ideal! I just want to make sure that having only champagne for the cocktail hour is being a good host Smiley smile

I wanted to do that as well but was told on WW that it was a bad idea. Curious to see what feedback you get. I was told it can't be a cocktail hour without cocktails. So maybe a champagne hour?

Champagne is a waste of money in my opinion. A lot of people don't drink it and once the bottle is open you have to pay for it.

What about the people who don't like champagne ? I would be upset that I couldn't have a drink during cocktail hour because my only option was something I didn't care for.

Champagne isn't everyone's drink. I would offer atleast a few more options. Beer and wine is more expensive than champagne? Is it true champagne (like from the region of France) or is it sparkling wine? Good quality champagne isn't cheap so I'm just curious as to how it's the cheaper option.

@MauiK & @ErinWood if not champagne then wine, who doesn't love wine. Lol. And an option of two hors d'oeuvres. I'm doing the open bar but the option of two hors d'oeuvres. I don't care who thinks it's tacky. Lol. It's coming out mine and my DH pocket, no one else's.

They offer it you for a cheaper rate because they know less people will like to drink it as other people have said. That being said, I think there are worse crimes you could commit like not having food at cocktail hour.

I'm not a fan of champagne honestly. Could you at least offer beer and wine as well?

I would see about offering beer and wine. I don't really like champagne and would probably just pay to get a drink that I like instead.

Like I said in another thread, if i was forced to choose one type of alcohol for the rest of my life it would be champagne. However, I know not everyone drinks it so no, I would not do a champagne only cocktail hour.

I think it's okay to do this but I love champagne.

The reason why champagne is easier in this instance, is because the venue is providing a free glass of champagne for each guest. So I thought I could save money by putting that toward the cocktail hour. Instead of having the free champagne during my open bar, which will include beer, wine, cocktails and champagne.

But I don't want some people to be upset so I might not do this. I still have a while to decide! I really appreciate all of your thoughts on the matter Smiley smile

Its not tacky as much as annoying. I feel like a very small amount of people actually like champagne - and I won't swap from champagne to gin so now I am stuck with wine and annoyed all night.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind that at all. As long as you offer apps to go along with the bubbly I think it's fine. I'm sure not everyone will agree lol

Isabel are we missing something or you just talking about hors d'oeuvres and no one else is talking about hors d'oeuvres?

I'd be weary about this. Not everyone likes champagne. I would do beer and wine as an alternative. To add to not that Erin's point some people don't like to mix drinks because they become ill. Usually at a wedding I'll drink my hard cocktails during cocktail hour then switch to wine but reversing that may be annoying to some.

Honestly that's $500 for another hour of open bar I would rather have you do that and Skip other things like decorations and favors and save the dates craft and no one cares about but you. Way too many people dislike champagne and so they'll be sitting there waiting for a real drink or there's going to pay for drinks which is what you really don't want to have happen

The free champagne is for toasts after speeches during dinner not so you can save money during cocktail hour. Open the bar during cocktail hour
