Change Chairs

Katherine, on December 29, 2021 at 10:25 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 15
My venue comes with standard banquet chairs that are attached below. I hate them. My fiancé thinks nobody will pay attention to the chairs. From looking at rental companies it will be about $8-$15 per chair depending on which one we decide. Both my mom and fiancé thinks this is an unnecessary expense. Any advice?Change Chairs 1

From the weddings I've attended, I can honestly say that I have no clue what the chairs looked like. I'd probably only remember them if they were super uncomfortable. We only sat in them for dinner, and then we were all on the dance floor and socializing with everyone else after. I would save the money and not pay to rent new chairs. Instead, you could always buy ribbon or some sort of decor to put on the chairs to make them a little more of what you're looking for? Buying the ribbon would be way cheaper than renting a bunch of chairs. Otherwise, if it's in budget and you really want different chairs, renting them would be a good idea!

I agree with your fiance, no one is going to pay attention to the chairs, beyond if they're sturdy and (reasonably) comfortable (and to be perfectly honest, I find many of the fancier, nicer looking chairs to be terrible to sit on). I agree with Lisa that ribbon will hide a multitude of sins on the provided chairs.

I think this completely depends upon how much the chairs are going to bother you. Usually I am all for switching out ugly banquet chairs. However, yours are very neutral and are not hideous by any means. I think they would really kind of melt into the decor and not stand out/be noticed. So, if they fit into your color scheme, I would probably save the money and just use them. However, if they do not fit into your color scheme at all and will stick out like a sore thumb, then I would probably splurge for chairs that fit your aesthetic.

You’re fiancé is not wrong — most people won’t think twice about the chairs as long as they aren’t uncomfortable, especially because in the grand scheme of banquet chairs (I’ve seen henouisly colored/patterned ones!) these seem pretty neutral and inoffensive. That said, I totally understand having a vision and wanting your space to look cohesive. What exactly is it that you hate about these? What is the rest of your decor vision?

I agree with your feelings about those types of banquet chairs… they aren’t the best looking! Lol However, the fact that the chair is a neutral enough color is helpful (versus being green or blue). It’s true that most guests may not notice the chair (as is). But, I do feel that when you use specialty chairs it adds to the decor and look of your reception. If you can afford renting chairs, go for it! If not, using those chairs will be fine. But definitely don’t use chair covers and sashes. Those are so “20 years ago“ and maybe work for a sweet 16 these days. Believe me, I used the fitted spandex chair covers for my first wedding in 2006 when they were a new trend. But I wouldn’t bother covering the chairs you have. They look better plain than being wrapped in fabric.

I think no one really pays attention to the chairs unless they are the cheap foldable kind. Those always get my attention because they're horrific. I think those chairs are very neutral and no one will notice them.

Thank you! They actually blend in with the color scheme so probably won't be that noticeable. My colors are lilac, hot pink, with gold accents. Just noticeable to me and the more I think about it the more I am like I can save money on that aspect of my wedding.

Thanks! Yeah covering the chairs or using sashes were not an option because of your sentiments above. I think I may just keep the chairs and use the money for something else.

As a guest I only care if they’re comfortable. No one cares what they look like. I can tell you from experience to avoid the spandex covers at all costs. I was at a renewal that a military couple told guests was their legal wedding and they had spandex covers to completely cover the otherwise comfy chairs that refused to stay on. Half the guests found it easier to remove the covers

Ok, hear me out here. Chairs make a big difference in the overall look of the entire reception. If it’s in your budget, I definitely recommend renting different chairs that fit and elevate your aesthetic.

I feel like chairs are one of those things you think no one will notice.. but they do!!! Ugly chairs ruin a venue, in my opinion. I say if you hate these that much, change them!!!!! I feel like all things related to weddings are personal preference. What one person values most could be something another person doesn't care about. Maybe you can get chair covers that are less expensive? That could be a compromise.

*I* barely remember the chairs at my wedding, and I definitely stressed about them during planning.

Update to say I am totally grateful that I rented chairs. They made a ton of difference and even my mom and Husband agree it was the right call.

Those look beautiful!! Very elegant, and they seem to pair well with the colors in the centerpieces. Glad everything worked out!
