Changing last name after the wedding

Jennifer, on September 7, 2021 at 8:32 AM Posted in Married Life 1 8
I want to take my husbands last name and didn’t realize I was supposed to put husbands last name as my name when filling out the forms for our marriage license. How do I go about getting our marriage license changed so it shows my last name as his?

Thank you!

I guess it all depends on the state that you are in maybe? On our marriage license I put my maiden name, not my married last name. My last name didn't officially change until I got it changed with SSA and went from there. But I am in Maryland, and you don't put your married name on the license because until you change it with SSA your maiden name is still technically your last name.

If the form asks for your name, it meant your current name. New last name would go on there if or where the form asked for “name after marriage” — many states don’t have that, mine did. Still, that’s really not what changes you name. Regardless of what goes on the form, the first step in name change is bringing the marriage certificate (once you get it back after the wedding) in to the social security office to get a new social security card (which you then take to the dmv to get a new ID/license).

Hey, I agree with the pp's. It depends on your state and how they format the application. Mine had a section for new surname and that’s where I put my husband’s last name.

On our marriage license I put my maiden/current name. Once you received your certified license you will be able to change your maiden name to your married name. When you change your to your new name you will have to present your certified copy to the dmv, San etc

As far as I understand, you put your legal name down which is your maiden name. After it’s changed with social security, you then become legally known as your married name.
