Changing Last Name with Business

Grace, on February 27, 2022 at 12:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 1
I always thought I would change my last name with no hesitation. 😅 I own a business on the side and decided to order business cards for it. FH helped me design them and naturally we put my name as it is now. We ordered 500 of them and then had an “oh crap” moment when we realized I would only be using them for 3 months before my name change and definitely would not go through all 500. FH cancelled the order. Now I need to reorder and I’m so hesitant as to what I should do. I don’t like the way my new name looks on the card. FH wants me to change my last name and I always said I did and still want to change it to make things less complicated especially with kids. Would it be a problem to keep my last name as is for my business? Or if my legal name changes, will I run into problems using it (for example, if someone gives me a check with maiden name)? Or would it be best to go ahead and use my new last name on everything while the business is still young? If I change my last name, my initials will be G.E.M. which I looooove. But if I keep my maiden name, my first and last name both start with a G which has a nicer sound to it. Would appreciate any advice, especially for those who have a business!

I hear you! My husband and I talked long and hard about the name change too. We decided to both hyphenate, in the end.

Our friend is a business owner and she went the First Maiden Married route. People who knew her under her maiden name still were able to tie her to the business under her new name.

On the other hand, I had teachers who got married and used their maiden name for work and their married name in their personal life. Not sure how that works legally or how much of a pain it is. The Court and your credit file keep your maiden name as a known alias when you change it so it is possible the bank would too (it probably depends on which bank you use).
