Changing Middle Name to Maiden name

Samantha, on January 4, 2020 at 10:16 PM Posted in Married Life 0 6
Maybe a long shot but worth a try... anyone on here live in MA and have experience changing their middle name (I want to use my maiden name as my middle name)? Based on my research, MA allows you to change your last name after marriage without having to go through the official court process. I have always wanted to keep my maiden name but instead change it to my middle name, but going through the court process to do so seems tricky... any tips , advice, or explanation? Did the process take a long time?

I don’t know about MA but I’m in NJ and I made my maiden name into a second middle name. It was literally no problem, at the social security office I just showed them the marriage license told them what I wanted my name to be and they changed it

The only real problem you would run into is if you tried to change your first name. Middle and last arent a problem.

I do know that there is no issue with SS you can just change your name... the issue comes at the DMV with the new Real ID. Your name needs to match your birth certificate or marriage certificate (and you cannot change your middle name on a marriage certificate I did ask 😂). SS card name is not accepted even if I changed my middle name there. I may just have to suck and up and go through the court.

Unfortunately at the DMV with the Real ID, your full name has to match your birth certificate or marriage certificate (or have a court name change document). You can’t change your middle name on your marriage certificate (believe me I tried 😂). And I need the Real ID since I fly frequently. I may just have to get my middle name changed through the court.

Well in that case I still think it’d be fine because your maiden name is on your birth certificate and on your marriage license, so if you told them that’s what you want to use as a middle initial on your drivers license I think it would be fine. It’s pretty common to make your maiden name your middle name so I just can’t imagine it being too much of a problem!

I am in TN and it was super easy for me to do this. I actually made a few changes. I had two middle names and wanted to add my maiden name to make 3, but it didn't fit. So one of my middle names is now part of my first name, then second middle and maiden as middle name, then new last name. It was no problem at all. Just took marriage cert. to SS office and changed, then to DMV.
