Changing name at dmv (california for Real Id)

MrsE2020, on March 12, 2020 at 4:23 PM Posted in Married Life 0 3

Maybe I haven't had enough caffeine today but I went to fill out the online application to change my driver's license with the DMV and it asked me to put my last name on the application. Since my Social Security Card and Marriage License will have my new name on it, do I put the new last name? For some reason, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this. There aren't any appointments at the DMV for about 3 months so I will have to go in person and hope for the best so I want to make sure it's as easy as possible.

You can not put your new last name until you have a new social security card that has the new last name on it already. I tried and they turned me down and told me come back once my social security card reflected the name change.

I actually have the new real id and before i got it, i asked them about my name change, They said once i officially change my last name, i can come in and pay for it again. I'm like seriously. My mom said we should've just gotten married before i had to renew my id. I told her i didn't think this would be a big deal. So just wait until you change your name. Hope this helps. I also live in california if that helps.

I renewed my license into the real ID when I changed my name, you need to do two different forms, one to first change your name and the second to renew your license. I did this last year so I may be off a bit but make sure you take all documentation needed and extra just incase they don't take what you have. I luckily had my 401k statement in my car that I was able to use as a back up. The same clerk did everything for me but if you ask them when you check in they'll let you know what you need to fill out. Also make sure you have your new social before you go in. Its really not a bad process just takes some time and you want to make sure that you have what you need. Do the application online before going and take the confirmation number they give you because if not you'll have to do it there.
