Changing Your Name - Do or Ditch?

Lynnie, on February 4, 2020 at 11:05 AM

Taking your new spouse's name is a tradition that has definitely been declining in popularity! As a couple, do you plan on sharing the same last name? Or are you ditching the name change tradition? (And all the paperwork that comes with it! ) Are you doing or ditching the name change tradition?...

I’ll be hyphenating my name. I have quite a few academic achievements that all have my name on them...plus I’m proud of my family’s name. I thought my fiancé would be upset about this, but he was completely supportive!

My fiancé was adopted from Ukraine and recently went to court and a whole long process to get his birth name back! I’m so proud to become a Tomarevsky!!!
He worked so hard to get that name back.

My last name is unique to my family so there is probably no one on earth with my name.

There are at least three other people with my first name and his last name, so I'm totally undecided!

Hyphenating will be too long and awkward for me to say, but at least his last name is easy to spell!

Yes I am changing my name. I have been married before and I am not keeping that name. We didn't even use my current last name on the invites or anything we used my maiden name.

I can't decide. Every time I think I've made my decision, I change my mind. I guess we'll see where I'm at in October.

This one we are doing a little differently. I want a hyphenated last name since I’m the only biological child between my dad and mother so I want both of their last names as well as my FH’s last name, but we also want our names to match so he would be getting his name changed as well. So it’s a little bit up for debate cause he’s not thrilled about having three last names lol

Still on the fence between changing to his only (Robinson) or keeping my maiden name as a middle name. Since I’m almost 40, I feel like I have a lot more papers/accounts in my maiden name than if I was only in my 20s. Really struggling with this one. Hubby is fine either way Smiley smile

I’m keeping mine. I’m an attorney, and it seems like a lot of professional women retain their last names or hyphenate. I thought about hyphenating, but my last name is long enough as it is. I’m also lazy and don’t want to update every ID, document, account, etc. I’m already bad at that when we move 😂 my only lingering concern is what will we do with our kids when we have them... I guess they’ll just take his last name? 🤔

I'm changing my legal name, but at work I'll still use my maiden name for consistency. It's not normal in China for the wife to change her name, so it's actually a tradition my FH is ditching and I am keeping. Can't wait! Smiley smile

Doing! His is much easier to say and spell for most people. And it is at the beginning of the alphabet, which is cool. And I think it also signifies us becoming one family, a joint unit. #BecomingaBraswell

I'm taking FH's last name and making maiden name my middle. I'm just glad my initials will no longer be KEN.
