Changing your name

Dawn, on November 21, 2020 at 6:50 PM Posted in Married Life 0 8
If any of you have, or are planning to change your last name, how is it done during the pandemic? In person at the SS office? Online?

Got married in July (Illinois) I mailed in my drivers license and a copy of my marriage license and got a new social. Did everything through mail and phone. Got my ss 3 weeks after. I have yet to do my drivers license though, they are closed here and for some reason they dont do name changes online.

Change your SS number first. I had to mail my license, passport, and marriage certificate to the office. Everything has to be the originals, they do not accept copies. They send your originals back as soon as they get them and you receive your SS card a few weeks after. Then you can take your current license and SS card to your DMV. The ones in Florida are open at this time, but I'm not sure about other states. Once you have your license, you can update credit cards, bank accounts, and other items. Credit cards can be done over the phone. If you plan on sharing a bank account with your husband, you both have to be there in person.

Laura-you mentioned Florida so I’m guessing you are in Florida. When you mailed your documents, could 1 document count for more than 1 area? I’m thinking my passport proves my citizenship as well as identity. I don’t want to mail my license as I need it day to day.

Yes, I'm down in Naples. I think you need two documents to prove citizenship. I could be wrong though. I hated mailing all of the original documents and put it off as long as I could. They do mail it back pretty quickly though. The offices may even be open now. I did mine a few months ago.

It is crazy for them to want you to mail these items! I'm in Pensacola, so knowing how Florida works is helpful. How do you find out how to get this changed? I was planning to take a day off to change SS, driver's license, get military ID, my bank, but looks like I will have to rethink that plan.

SSA will make you Mail in everything because they aren't accepting in person appointments for name change. They'll then mail you everything back and you'll need an appointment for the MVA/DMV to switch your license. I was able to do everything else over the phone/through email. (Work, health insurance, car insurance, banks, 401K...etc)
