Charger plates, but with disposable plastic plates/bowls & utensils. Thoughts?

Christina, on June 26, 2021 at 10:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 6

Thoughts on having nicer gold charger plates at our reception table settings, with a colored cloth napkin and printed buffet menu, but instead of completing the setting with china and glassware, using caterer provided disposable serveware. We are on a tight budget but are attempting to have a formal-er feeling wedding. I love the look of chargers, but am not sure if it is OK to pair them with less formal plates. Have any of y'all done this? Any suggestions?

It's fine to do whatever you want, but the chargers will probably highlight the disposable flatware and make you look like you ran out of money at the last minute. If you're using fancier disposables that look nicer, it may work. Some disposables are heavy duty plastic and have a gold trim.

Have you looked into using bamboo or palm leaf plates? They're disposable but looks rustic chic.

We used disposable bamboo Smiley smile loved how easy it was!!
It depends on the plate if it goes well with the charger or if it looks too cheap. Chargers aren’t necessary.

My sister did this. She had hard plastic chargers from hobby lobby and hard plastic plates and silverware from Sam's. It wasn't odd at all.

As with most things, actually seeing it together helps. It might look totally fine and it might not. Do you have pics of the charger and plate you plan to use?

Also, how much are the chargers? Would it be better to use that money toward real plates and skip chargers? Just an idea. It’s hard to achieve your goal of a formal-ish look with disposable plastic plates. As the first poster said, the chargers might highlight the plates when that’s probably what you’re hoping to avoid.

I agree, the charger would highlight the informality of the disposable plate and utensils. I’d either go with charger + real plates/utensils or skip the charger altogether. I have seen people print paper placemats with pictures of formal setups that can make the table look more put together but still look fine with disposables.
