Charger Plates. . . Yay or Nay.

Macie, on August 17, 2014 at 6:49 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

I've recently become obsessed with our table setting for our reception tables. At first I did not even think of having place settings, since we are doing a BBQ buffet for dinner. BUT I've seen so many beautiful pictures online and on Pinterest and I think it really pulls the whole table together. So I've already found disposable dinner & salad plates that are gold-rimmed and bought the pink dinner & cocktail napkins to match my theme. So now I'm having a really hard time spending $100 on gold chargers for 60 guests. Even though I think it would look amazing with everything on our table! Is anyone else using an alternative to chargers? I had no idea they were so expensive until I started pricing them!! I really really want them. . . just can't justify spending the money. Lol HELP!

Have you looked on classifieds/ebay for used ones?

I'll be honest - I have been to quite a few weddings - and not once have I noticed the place settings nor do I remember a single one. Not even my own. So I would say if it's more than you want to spend - skip them!

Then you don't need them if you can't justify spending the money on them. But you can re-use them for dinner parties, setting for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have a set of gold and silver charger plates and use them all the time.

You can always buy them and sell them or rent them to other brides. I'm selling anything we've bought outright to my cousin for a little less than what we've paid for it for her wedding next September.

Like Stephanie, I don't remember the place settings. If the venues we are using did not include them, we wouldn't have them.

When is your wedding (I'm on my phone & can't see your date)?

Your wedding sounds like mine...small (we have 50 guests), BBQ buffet (hello Famous Dave's!), and my colors are muted tones of pink, green and gold!

Maybe if you buy them, I can buy them from you to help you recoup some of your cost?

I totally splurged on wooden chargers. I just had my heart set on them and kept my eye on sites like Recycle Your Wedding and 100 Layer Cake. I got them used from a rental company that listed them on 100 Layer Cake. I really think they will go great with our rustic/woodland theme and make the tablescapes amazing.

Charger plates through my decor vendor were $1/piece. I think they are the same price at hobby lobby. So I'm paying $100 for 100 guests.

That seems like a lot for chargers, usually I find them for about $1.00 used or you can find them at Michaels/AC Moore on sale every once in a blue moon (or you can use one of their 20%-25% off your entire purchase coupon). Definitely check used wedding decor sites like tradesy, the others that were mentioned and craigslist.

It's not necessary to have them, but I bought mine for $1.33 from kijiji. (second hand). I'd look around.

I've been married less than a year and can honestly say I have NO CLUE what our place settings looked like. I just don't remember because I never paid attention. No one is going to notice and it's such a minor detail that if you can't justify it, I really wouldn't worry about it.

I'm in the same boat as you are. We are having a small, casual wedding and they aren't in the budget. I would LOVE to have them. I'm using black table linens because the venue has them and I can use them for free. I have my grandma's ivory doilies to use with the centerpieces and I was thinking of getting ivory paper placemats with a lace edging to put under the plates instead of chargers. It will be a lot more affordable but still help the table settings pop. Can I ask where you got the disposable plates with the gold trim?

I think they're so cute! I'm not having them though because I am splurging on chiavari chairs.

Honestly, I have no idea what a charger plate is. I know I could google it and then I would know, but the point is...if you don't have your heart set on it, no one will likely notice and you can save money for something else you absolutely do want.

I love charger plates but they are secondary on my list so if there is money left to spend on it after I get all of my primary and necessary items then I will splurge on them
