Cheap wedding cake idea

Feneesa, on March 26, 2018 at 4:43 PM Posted in Style and Décor 1 18
So I wanted to share this. My coworker went to this place wedding where the bride ordered 3 cakes from Walmart stacked them added flowers and a topper. She didn’t tell them it was for a wedding because of course the price goes up. She simply told them the flavors and colors. I personally think it looks great. Here’s a pic. Just an idea.

Ok, this is just pure genius but it almost seems too good to be true lol

If you don't mind me asking, do you know how much she ended up spending on this?

That does look fantastic! A note of caution though because the professionals support their cakes from collapsing with dowels/straws and cake boards between tiers so if the cake had to be moved/be displayed for awhile and/or was made from really light cakes (angel food vs. pound cake) there could be a collapse.

You have to be really careful with this. If the cake isn't supported then it can fall apart before it is cut. Bakers put either dowels or big straws in each layer to support the weight and keep it from ruining the cake. If you do decide to do this, research and learn how to stack a cake so you don't end up ruining the cake because you got it cheaper.

I sure hope she inserted some dowels and used the supporting plates. Otherwise she took a huge risk of the whole thing caving in to the bottom layer.

Walmart actually has great cakes. We've ordered 3 tier cakes for baby showers, birthday parties, etc and people were impressed with quality. We were impressed by the savings.

Just don't try to transport it, bump the table, or change anything about it.

Bakers typically have to secure secure the structure to make sure the cake doesn't slide or move. My cousin's baby shower cake was three tier and even that had dowels for support.

Also don't let non food grade flowers touch the cake. Whole Foods sells edible or food safe flowers so if you need them get them there (they're like $6 for a small pack). A lot of bulk flowers are sprayed with pesticides or preservatives. I know my baker had to use flowers only she sourced to make sure they were safe to have on something you were eating.

Do you have a pic of how her actual cake turned out? I feel like me slapping a few tiers together would look really, really sloppy.

I'd be curious to know the price difference between doing this and just ordering a 3 tiered wedding cake from Walmart.

Edit-- if this is the actual cake it looks pretty good. But I wouldn't trust myself. Would still want to know the diff in price between this and just ordering a wedding cake from Walmart.

This is the actual cake. I’m waitig to hear how much it cost, but I definitely agree with adding supports.

Or assemble it *at* the venue with back up icing, on the table it will be displayed! Oh man I would be sweating bullets if my cake was stacked with no supports

I actually think this cake looks pretty unshapely and obviously not baked by a professional. But totally worth the savings if that’s what is needed!! I just think it would be super obvious to guests what went on here lol.

Or you could do something like this and not have to worry about supporting the tiers.

Agreed! The second tier looks like it is starting to cave in (the left side of the photo). I'm all for cost savings where you can do it but, this isn't going to pass as a professional cake (and that's fine).

Personally, I'd just stack the tiers on individual stands like WED18 posted above instead. That or just be honest and order a pre-stacked wedding cake from Walmart so that it will be properly supported since I doubt it would be much more expensive.

I like this idea even better!!! It cost the bride $150, for those who were wondering. I’m personally doing cupcakes and deserts and a giant cupcake for fH and I to cut.

My fh cousin got her wedding cake at Walmart. They supported it as needed and the woman at the bakery took pride in their work. It was three tiers as well and the bakery still has to follow the proper food laws for display. The quaility was decent

I'm glad she took charge in making that decision! However, I hope that she had the materials to support the weight of the cake, but TAKE THAT wedding vendors that want to charge/tax engaged couples planning a wedding!Smiley laugh Who's laughing now?!?! lol

It is ok. Not as polished as I would like my cake to be, but if the bride was happy, then yay.

I know many of the local grocery stores here do wedding cakes for less than $150.

Some people just get a cake to cut...a small one and have sheet cake in the back that is cut and served. That is an idea to. $50 for a full sheet cake with no specific décor on it, and maybe $30 for a 6" or 8" decorated round to cut.

I would be terrified the cake would fall. The bakers of wedding cakes add supports and heavy cardboard or plastic separations per layer for stability.
