Chiavari Chairs..yay or nay? (comfy?)

vicky, on May 6, 2013 at 8:44 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 17

I've never sat in a chiavari chair (that I can remember) so idk if they are comfy enough to be worth it. Can someone tell me??

We are having an intimate wedding in a small private room. This means 20 guests at a long table that fits 20 chairs max with no real dance floor (aka guests staying seated for around 3 hours so chairs should be comfy). The chairs in the room are comfy and are nice looking, wood with cream leather (picture below w/15 chairs) but squishing 20 of those chairs means 2 at each head and the chairs will practically touch each other. I've squeezed around enough tables to know that this can create a problem for anyone wanting to get up.

So here is my question. I think gold chiavari chairs will look really nice and since they are narrower will fit 20 people much better BUT will they be comfortable enough to sit in for 3 hours and worth $280 to rent, deliver & set up? Half our guests are over 50 (parents & grandparents) & I want to make sure everyone is comfortable.

I'm pretty sure they do come with a cushion, so they are relatively comfortable. I think if you're sitting in any chair for 3 hours you will get a little uncomfortable so I would definitely spend the money.

    Thanks Amy & Mrs K.

I've heard mixed reviews on the cushion being comfy but the back being awkward & it made me nervous that FH will complain we spent $ so his back could hurt. I might just need to bother the event coordinator to see just how squished the other chairs will be & if its bad then bite the bullet on the $300.

I love that our venue comes with chivari chairs! They have seat pads, and we sat in them for the food tasting (about 1-2 hours) and I was perfectly comfortable. Not enough to want to curl up in it, but you get the idea...

I just love the look of them, IMO it gives the room a warmer, fancier feel Smiley smile

Thanks Kristin. Advice after 1-2 hours is really helpful! I'm leaning more towards them now with this bit of info.

My planner calls chivari chairs suffer for fashion chairs but i compared with the other cushier ones that my venue provided (ie sat in one right after the other) and it wasn't that big a difference. I think the look is worth the extra cost and outweighs the slight difference in comfort.

I honestly prefer the chairs in your photo, but I also understand what you are saying, about the room being crowded.

Could you do a combination of the two? Use most of the chairs from the photo, and a sprinkling of Chivari's? My thought is every third chair could be a Chivari. That way, it looks like an artistic decision, not a space decision.

Glad to help Vicky Smiley smile I think what you should also take into consideration with the chairs in your photo is height. If they're squishy, although that may be comfortable, will people sink down into them and have trouble with the height of the table then? I'm a short girl and sometimes I feel like a kid at the grown up table if it's too low... just a thought

I do agree with Kathy, if you are afraid of spacing, you could always have a mixture of both chairs. I'm a weirdo and want everything to match though, so all chivaris for me! I'll just decorate mine and FH's for the evening Smiley winking

They are narrow and delicate. check, but you may have to pay more for padding, which is added and tied onto chair, so it will give a different look than you presently have. So if you have heavier guests, they won't be too comfortable, and since you do not have a dance floor, it's not like they will get up to dance. Stick with what you have and save the $.

I don't know anything about chairs and had to google this to see what it was.. but the ones in the pictures have a back and look more sturdy.

As someone who has a fairly bony back, I'd be uncomfortable in a chair without a padded back for a long span of time -- I'd end up with bruises.

@Forever Young.. Yeah I think chairs with backs would be more comfortable. I cannot think of a specific time I was uncomfortable in a non full back chair though.. but it seems like the full back would be better lol

Thanks ladies. I'm figuring the comfort if these chairs has a lot to do with each persons body & that probably accounts for the mixed reviews. I might have to just order them & test them out the morning of & hope if they are bad the venue will store them & let me use their chairs. I wish I didn't need to decide so soon but the venue suggested we figure out ASAP bc of high demand for rentals (graduation parties & weddings) Memorial Day weekend. Thanks again ladies!!

We are having them at our wedding, but we are also having padding. The pads are included with the rental charge.

They are comfortable if you get the padding with them (not so comfortable without, as it's just like sitting in a wooden chair without padding). Some companies charge extra to rent the padding per seat. So make sure you ask.

The only way I would have chivari chairs was if my wedding was luau/asian themed...to me it looks like bamboo and it wouldn't match with anything else. I don't get why people love them SO much!
