Chinese food buffet for reception?

Lauralou, on August 26, 2017 at 8:38 AM Posted in Planning 0 36

Has anyone ever done a Chinese food buffet for the reception or seen it at one they attended? I put in a request for a quote from our favorite restaurant for catering but was curious if there was a reason this wasn't a popular choice?

I have never seen it, but would be fine with me. Just make certain they have at least one vegetarian option, and you may want to keep that at a separate table (so the non-vegies dont take it all). I have had many good tofu dishes in a Chinese place.

Sounds good! If you can accommodate allergies (think mushrooms, msg, and soy- those are likely the biggest offenders in Chinese food) and dietary preferences (vegetarians and/or folks that don't eat pork) you are probably set. Your guests will appreciate clear labeling so they know what is hiding in those crispy egg rolls or under the bright sauces

Maybride, good points. I would also see if you can ask for no peanuts, if anyone has a problem with them.

Is allergies something that anyone has included on RSVP cards? I would have never thought of the MSG allergy so I will keep that in mind as I plan.

If a lot of your guests like it, go for it. My guests are a bit more traditional.. we're getting married on Cinco de Mayo and I'd love to have a total Mexican feast but I know it wouldn't be received well. So I only chose margaritas and tacos as part of our cocktail hour.

I'd be hard-pressed to find something to eat if Chinese was the only option. I have a peanut allergy, and am moderately intolerant to soy. Anything with soy sauce, or peanuts, is out for me, which eliminates a large amount of Chinese food.

However, as long as you provided an alternate option for me, I'd be fine.

We included a line for allergies on our RSVP cards.

Maybe I haven't a good Chinese food place but the food always makes me bloated so I definitely wouldn't want to be dancing around after eating. I'd probably want to lay down haha but if you guys eat it all the time and don't feel that way then it could be a fun idea

I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food and FH is Chinese. I'd eat it but wouldn't be thrilled with it. I never feel good afterwards and do get hungry after.

I've seen a Chinese noodle/wok station but not a buffet before. It was manned by someone so you'd pick your toppings and they'd throw it in the pan and make it in front of you. Was cool and tasty. The other stations were Italian (pastas and charcuterie) and American (sliders, bacon on sticks) themed. The wok station was the most popular.

Also be mindful of anyone with a gluten allergy - soy sauce has gluten in it. I'd have plain white rice and other options with no soy sauce for those guests and also ask if the restaurant has gluten free soy sauce.

I think in theory it's a good idea, but in reality it's a nightmare for some of the most common allergies. Peanuts, soy, gluten. Maybe do that for the rehearsal dinner?

Just make sure it's high quality Chinese food, not the stuff you get at buffets that also have ice cream and french fries.

Chinese food is one of the most diverse and exciting cuisines in the world. What gets eaten in America is often a sodium-logged bastardization, but for a wedding I would want to be serving the real thing. However, you want to food to be accessible as well. That's the challenge.

Hoisin duck rolls, Mapo dofu over rice, sauted prawns with vegetables, lobster noodles, beef and broccoli - things like that might be a good start.

If it is REAL traditional Chinese food (like high quality), that can be delicious. But the take-out Chinese or even just moderate Chinese restaurants typically make me very sick (preservatives maybe? Too many sauces?) so I know I wouldn't be able to eat. But Chinese food made by hand in a high quality restaurant never does. I love it!

I'd rather have Chongqing chicken and ma po tofu than bog-standard wedding choke-inducing prime rib and chicken with beige sauce.

I have an MSG sensitivity so I would be wary. That being said, I love Chinese food! Just make sure you let the caterer know of any allergies, or use a caterer that doesn't use MSG.

I've seen one done on television. There was a big Lazy Susan in the middle of the table and about ten or twelve different dishes in the middle. I'd be cool with it, but I like Chinese food and don't have the associated affects that many people complain about.

I've never seen a wedding done this way but one of my friends did his son's bar mitzvah that way and it was a ball.

I love the idea personally, as long as there are some vegetarian choices.
