Chip/dip bar

tucker052315, on April 12, 2015 at 9:57 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 20

Ive seen several people talk about candy, ice cream, s'more bars, etc. I got to thinking about what I wanted to serve during the cocktail hour and was thinking of making a dip bar (FH fav snack is chips and dip). I'm thinking a combination of both savory and sweet. My current ideas are:

Savory Dips: Homemade salsa, ranch, garlic and chive, smokey bacon and tomato, and spinach

Savory Dippers: Corn chips, pretzels, potato chips, triscuits, carrots

Sweet Dip flavors: Cookie Dough, oreo, and orange cream sickle

Sweet Dippers: animal crackers, vanilla wafers, teddy grahams

Thoughts and suggestions?

I think that sounds like an awesome idea, I love chips and dip! My only thought is maybe do a chocolate cookie instead of one of the dessert cookies you have only because they all have the same type of flavor, the chocolate might mix it up a little

This is going to sound lame but maybe something "plain" like just a simple cheese dip or sour cream just in case you have guests that prefer simple flavors. For instance, other than salsa I wouldn't eat any of the dips you mentioned. Don't get me wrong, they sound delicious, I'm just not adventurous with certain foods. ETA: this is a great idea and you know your crowd so good luck!

I think it's a fun idea. Just make sure there are tongs for the chips so guests aren't sticking their fingers in it.

If you are having child guests at your wedding I would avoid a dip station if at all possible. Kids will stick their hands into the stuff and cross contaminate everything. That is just like candy bars - kids will not use tongs or scoops and will just grab.

I would plant myself in front of your dip bar and not leave until you made me...so obviously I think it's a great idea!!! I love chips and dips and dipping sweet stuff too! If you want to do something simple, like @Kimberly suggested, "pub cheese" dip doesn't require heating and is a great cheese dip (like a cheese ball but softer, and great with pretzels).

Well.. you will always have those double dippers. Me personally, I don't like salsa but wouldn't eat any of it unless you had little containers of it where people could take their own. Maybe in those little ketchup containers with lids. I'm assuming this is a casual wedding?

Chocolate teddy grams or chocolate gram crackers dipped in butter-cream frosting is awesome too!

Nomnomnom I now want chips and dip so bad(lol but it's kinda late at night to be doing so) Yeah I think it signed so great but after someone said the double dippers I am wondering if you cooks have a safe way of having the dips. You could get the little plastic cups for crazy cheap but they don't hold a lot. Other option is to have someone standing at the bar the entire time to deter those double dippers.

Sorry but I don't think this is a good idea for a wedding. Friday night drinks yes, wedding no.

Will you be getting your caterer to help out with this? I think it sounds DELICIOUS but also alarmingly messy. Dozens of people with crumbly and smeary food combined with alcohol... eek.

Sounds like a good idea, if it were me I'd have tons of those little sauce cups for people to grab and plates, so people could fill up three or four dip cups and then pile on whatever snacks they'd like and then walk around and dip as they please. I mainly think this because otherwise people will all crowd around the chips bar, and then if someone does scoop salsa onto a plate, it is so hard to scoop up the dip from a plate which is why the cups would be handy.

I also think something like a queso dip or guacamole (if you can keep it cold) would be good. Also they have like dried snap peas that kind of taste like chips that would be a nicer healthy option to add. This is a fairly casual thing though so if you're having a really fancy wedding I don't think it'd go well. And same as others mentioned, watch out for kids and their fingers!

Love this idea! Especially the sweet dips for something unexpected. Also, dunkaroo/cake batter dip. You can google/pinterest search it- I believe it's a combo of funfetti cake mix, whipped cream, and yogurt. Super easy and delicious.

I'm with HiH. The cups would be a great idea, both for ease of dipping and to keep people from dipping directly into the main dish. I'd probably also eat so much I wouldn't want dinner. Ha!

Would you be able to have someone stand by the chip and dip table to kind of 'supervise'? I know my SIL specifically invited helpers (like her MOH's niece), she knew her purpose and invite to the wedding was to do some jobs and it worked out great.

I like it! It's something different.

I am one of those highly paranoid anti-germ people, so I definitely see the concerns about double dipping and dirty fingers. Sauce cups are a great idea. As an alternative, if you aren't having a ton of tables, would it be possible to put smaller bowls at each table? Would probably have to cut back on the number of dips then or there would be a lot of waste.... but might keep contamination issues down. Are you going to have a catering staff? Maybe someone could watch the dip table; this would also help with replenishing things that might run out.

    as the caterer talking;

I think it sounds cute but I think it also sounds really messy and very costly by the time you get enough stuff of each kind to look like anything. I don't know that anyone but a kid would eat a sweet dipping thing at cocktail hour. It will also take people forever to decide, construct and move on.

many of the venues here make these cute little 'cocktails' in shot glass or tiny champagne flutes, with the dip at the bottom and the dippers sticking out of the top, like a little firework. (What i mostly see is quad and tortilla strips, cocktail with shrimp, and crudite's with dip underneath.) They either pass them or arrange them on buffet tables on levels.
