Chuppah Dilemma

Samantha, on July 10, 2019 at 7:45 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8
My fellow Jewish brides (and any from UT) ... we already have so many requirements going into our ceremonies. I’ll be amazed if we end up under an hour for the entire thing. We already hit a snag with not having other Jewish friends in UT to witness and sign our Ketubah but the thankfully the Rabbi knows people who could help out. Thank you strangers... haha!

My next issue is.. the Rabbi shut down my idea of a floating Ketubah under the tree we want to have the ceremony. Says we need an actual structure with four poles. I can’t find any rentals that even know what a Ketubah is and arches don’t count! So he connected me with his temple congregation... they have two options and both are so plain. But. Also SO EXPENSIVE. Wasn’t budgeting for that AT ALL. It’s a $250 refundable deposit and $150 to rent it..ummmmm. And now I have to procure some more floral and drapery to spruce it up and gave my florist a $100 budget for that. Now we’re at $250 for the Chuppah. I understand the importance but what was wrong with my first idea 🤣🤣 (with this budget I could’ve gotten the photographer we won’t be having!)

I attached a couple pictures of the idea with the tree and one of the actual Chuppah. I did decide to keep the tree draped because our sweetheart table is going under it for the reception and I love the look of the floral arrangements and chandelier with drapery she is designing. With the new (very large) Chuppah structure I am now also going to have to re-work where and how the ceremony space will flow and be.

A Chuppa is supposed to have four "walls" to represent your future Jewish home. That is why your idea with the tree, while beautiful, is just not a Chuppa.
As far as the price, $250 is a great price. I also like that they money is going to the congregation. If it's too much for you, you could always build something.
We got our Chuppa from the florist for $400 and then used family Talit as the top.

Yours is very pretty. And I understand the 4 pillars and home, the only reason I thought it’d be fine is the images are from other Jewish weddings. It’s not a huge deal just the budget is stressing me out b/c I wasn’t expecting it to be so much. If it wasn’t a destination wedding, I’d build it myself. Lol.

Wow we paid $495 just to rent the chuppah structure, not including draping or flowers. So $150 sounds like an amazing deal.

She didn’t even know what a Chuppah was - Jewish weddings aren’t common in UT, everyone is used to Mormon weddings. And I have a very local florist.

Hi Samantha! I found a few event rental companies in your area who list that they offer chuppas on their WeddingWire pages, and there may be even more if you comb through the rest of the vendor listings we have.
