Cigar Bar: classy or trashy

Gracie, on September 19, 2016 at 9:12 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 47

My FH and I love the 1920's/Art Deco time period and are trying to incorporate that into our wedding. I was considering having a cigar bar with 3-4 different types of cigars displayed nicely in humidors, cigar cutters, and a glass jar of match boxes. My FH and I don't actually smoke. This is mainly fun for the guests and decoration. Do you feel it would be distasteful? I'm hoping to have it look similar to this with more space, cigars, and decor.

I personally don't think it's trashy but I don't find it to be classy either.

One of my friends had it at her wedding. The only negative was people spent most the time at the cigar bar than they did dancing so it was an empty dance floor.

I think with the style that it is a really cute idea!!! Just make sure, if you are inside, to put up a sign about not smoking them there... LOL

I assume this will be outdoors? If it is in a designated area outside, I think it's ok. I was at a wedding on Saturday that had a cigar bar. It looked cute and was set far away from most of the other activities.

I think the decor is cool but that many of your guests smoke cigars? Otherwise, I wouldn't go this route.

This would be set up for cocktail hour, outside on the patio area (as long as the weather is nice.) Our cocktail hour is held indoors, but has a huge patio we are able to utilize. It's beautiful! I figured we can place one of the 3 drink bars and the cigar bar out there.

I wouldn't do it just because of guests who are in sensitive groups (asthmatic, children, pregnant, etc). Even if they're actively smoking outside, the lingering smell bothers a lot of people. My mom and aunt get really sick (headaches, cough) if they're around the smell. I get chest pain.

I have some guests who would LOVE this. It's my to my taste, but it's definitely not trashy!

    CLASSY AF!

However, if you're going to have people smoking, it needs to be outside. As PPs have mentioned, a lot of folks are super sensitive about smoke. It takes a good 45 minutes to an hour to smoke a good cigar, so I'd be prepared for people to be outside for a long time smoking.

DH and I would be all over that.

ETA: Just saw your comment about the patio.

    Sounds great!

I wouldn't want to be near the people smoking because I don't want to breathe it in, but if it's outdoors and away from everyone else, I think certain people would really enjoy it!

I think about 1/2 my guests will smoke a cigar. Some are more avid cigar smokers than others, I'm assuming some of my older male guests would actually bring their own. Others would smoke the cigars because of the convenience.

SailawaySomppi: definitely would have a sign if the cigars were inside!

    Keri: That's a great point.

Cigar bar is definitely not trashy! If you have a decent amount of guests who would smoke them, I would absolutely have one at the cocktail hour! Just make sure that there is enough fresh air circulating so that others who don't like smoke aren't engulfed by it!

    Also date twin! Smiley smile

My father had one at his wedding. Some were used at the wedding, most were taken home by him; he has no complaints about that either way.

I think as long as your venue has a designated smoking area, it's fine to have; you're not forcing anyone to smoke. I would ask them before investing in it, though, just in case!

I can't stand cigar smoke - makes me sick every time I am around it. Even if people are smoking off to the side, the smoke is still so heavy that it makes no difference. Cigarette smoke I can be around all day long without issue.

If you have a cigar bar, people will smoke the cigars there (especially if outdoors). Just be mindful that some people may be very sensitive to the smoke.

I don't think it's trashy. But it does seem like a "prop" to me. But that isn't necessarily a good or bad thing since you have a definite theme you are trying to convey.

As long as people that do NOT like cigar smoke can be completely away from it (i.e. the smoke isn't drifting inside by being too close to the doors), then I say go for it especially since you know a large portion of your guests would enjoy it. But also be prepared for those guests to disappear for a huge chunk of time.

As an asthmatic, I would be very unhappy if people started smelling like smoke..that's enough to set me off. If I couldn't breathe it in though, whatever. It's not classy but not trashy, it's just whatever.

Mrs.Coakley T.:You are the first I've met with the same date!!! So excited!!

Jay: yes they do have a designated smoking area. They have a ton of space and the ability to roam the venues grounds to be even more distant.

OriginalKD: that's funny because I am opposite, I can tolerate cigar smoke, cigarette smoke makes me ill! Most guests will probably stay indoors enjoying cocktail hour, so those who want to smoke or can handle being around it can go outdoors.

Lol, we have a bar here call Cigar Bar so I thought you are talking about that. Like pp mentioned, as long as the actual smokers can be far away from everyone else, it's seem fine. I will have to say, actual good cigars are pretty expensive AF. You might want to ask cigars lovers before deciding on that.

It's like having a rum bar but only serve Bacardi. Actual rum lovers will be disappointed.
