Civil Ceremony's Abroad

Katia, on December 15, 2020 at 8:42 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 4

Hi All!

Looking for some advice - we're getting married just outside of Rome in May 2022 and are doing so on the grounds so plan to have a symbolic ceremony. However I can't decide whether to have the civil ceremony (just with our parents present) here in the UK or whether to do it in a town hall in Rome.

I'm aware of the paperwork involved with getting married in Rome, which doesn't bother me. However, does anyone knowledge about the civil ceremony in Italy?

I'm really looking to understand is it more special/romantic/intimate then getting it down in a town hall locally (UK)? As I think it would be worth it if it gave us more special memories, irrespective of the added hassle?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about Italy specifically, but I know in Spain and France the officiant for civil weddings is required to recite a specific script. The required script in Spain is very bureaucratic, kind of long, and not romantic at all lol. I wouldn't be surprised if Italy were the same. It may also be worth looking into whether the process/requirements differ if you're not a resident of Italy.

Couples must be 18 years old to legally marry, and under-18s must have written parental consent. Muslim individuals aged 16 can marry with the permission of sharia authorities.

What do you need to get married in Italy?
    Necessary paperwork and documentation

A valid passport or national ID card for both parties
Original birth certificate for both parties
Divorce papers or death certificate if you have been previously married and divorced or widowed
An affidavit, or sworn before a consular office of your home country, stating that there's no legal impediment to your marriage in your home country
An Atto Notorio signed by two witnesses, further confirming no legal impediment to your marriage
A declaration of intent to marry that will go to the civil registrar.

I agree with PP. I wouldn't say that it is romantic per se. In France it really depends on the town hall. Some are magnificent chateau like rooms others look like simple board rooms. I imagine Rome would have several venues for civil ceremonies around the city. If you don't care about the paperwork then go for it. I'd also look into how Brexit will effect your plans on the legal front. Have a lovely Italian wedding.
