Civil wedding then church wedding

Scott, on November 5, 2017 at 10:52 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 2

I’ve seen some posts about this but not exactly our situation. My fiancée and I plan to have a civil wedding... like full-on married, complete with wedding bands and a name change. Later on we would like to have a ceremony in a Catholic Church - is this even possible?

This is different from other posts I’ve read, because we wouldn’t be hiding the fact that we’d be legally married at all.

Have you talked to your church? There are a lot of discrepancies based on your parish or priest.

It's called a convalidation, and is a recognized thing in the Catholic church. Indeed, a Catholic who gets married in a civil ceremony is asked not to take communion before having a convalidation, because the Catholic church does not recognize the civil marriage. However, a convalidation is typically a much smaller ceremony than a wedding.

You should talk to your priest about this, though. Is there a reason not to just have a Catholic ceremony in the first place?
