Cleaning and Selling Wedding Dress

Jennifer, on October 21, 2022 at 3:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 8
I don’t really want to keep my wedding dress and would rather it went to another home. Are there special cleaning services for wedding dresses? My train is completely dirty. Also, what are the best sites or ways to sell it? Thanks!

There are sites like stillwhite.com. I think they sell on consignment. But I don't know the case if your dress is not still white. But this sales process seems to occur rather slowly. David's Bridal has the preservation kit which I think includes dry cleaning but that would cost at least $100. There probably are some donation sites for military brides. Another option is to dye or repurpose the dress.

Hi Jennifer! Yes a lot of dry cleaners also have special wedding dress cleaning services. I suggest looking at local reviews and searching for the ones where the person mentions they had their wedding dress cleaned there. It can cost around $100-$300 depending on the style of the dress, materials, and how dirty it is.

For selling, stillwhite.com, Poshmark, and local wedding Facebook groups are good places to start. There may also be consignment shops in your local area that will accept wedding dresses and sell for you.

You can bring it to a regular dry cleaners! It might be quite expensive tho, beware!

Since you paid about $600 for it, the resell price might not be any higher than that. Then of course the market group may take a big chunk too unless it is more of a direct sale to another bride.

I have actually sold three wedding dresses on stillwhite.com. Whether it sells (and how quickly) depends a lot on 3 things:

    1. Whether your dress is a design that is in high demand

    2. Whether or not it has been altered. Altered dresses just don’t tend to sell.
    3. The selling price. Expect to offer a deep discount I’ve seen dresses that were only discounted a small percentage sit on those sites for years. And remember, dress trends come and go quickly. So the longer the dress sits unsold, the more out of demand it will become.
Another option would be to check with consignment stores.

Thank you! This is helpful. Did you get the dresses cleaned before posting them? I definitely need to do this and I’m not sure what the best option is.

The dresses I sold were brand new, never worn, never altered (changed my mind on them after two years of pandemic postponements 🤦🏼‍♀️), so cleaning wasn’t needed. If you are going to list them on one of the major used sites (stillwhite, nearlynewlywed, etc.) you will definitely need to have them cleaned. I think all these sites require them to be professionally cleaned (if worn) prior to listing.

I had a friend who had her dress cleaned and instead of preserving, donated to a seamstress who uses them to make christening gowns for hospital baptisms.
