Cleaning engagement ring before wedding

Hailey, on August 11, 2022 at 4:30 AM Posted in Planning 0 12
Are you supposed to send your engagement ring in for a cleaning/inspection before the wedding?

I have a rose gold engagement ring from Kay Jewelers and I vaguely remember my fiancé telling me something about taking it in to get cleaned before the wedding because he got the warranty on it. When I called Kay Jewelers today the girl seemed kinda confused at first but then said I could leave my ring with them and they’ll ship it off to get inspected and cleaned, taking roughly two weeks to come back. I get married in 6 weeks! Smiley smile
Should I just have them clean it in the store or would you recommend I send it in? To the naked eye my ring looks great, other than typical surface scratches and the main stone (a Morganite) getting foggy…but I usually clean it myself with Dawn Smiley smile

My friend had her ring from Kay's and had to have it sent put every so often to get cleaned in order to maintain the warranty. I'd check to maksure that yours isn't the same way. You could have it cleaned and pay to expedite the shipping. Or if it really isn't all that bad and you need a quick shine I dunk mine in a denture tab before I soak my retainer. Gets it very sparkly

I didn’t. I just used the jewelry cleaning wipes and it worked just fine for me. I don’t know if I’d be comfortable waiting two weeks. Although, your wedding is 6 weeks out it still seem like it’s cutting it kinda close. Unless they can do it before then. Would you be okay with jus cleaning it with Dawn a day before the wedding?

You're supposed to have it cleaned before the wedding because you've been wearing it, but not wearing your wedding ring, so if you look at them next to each other your e-ring will look, for lack of a better word, dingy. As far as sending it off, I would go to the store and ask about what you need to do for the warranty. For my diamond warranties I just have to take the pieces in and have the prongs checked in store, then they clean it as a courtesy.

I had my engagement ring, wedding band, and my husband's wedding band all cleaned before our wedding! We were able to do this in store, it took them maybe 10-15 minutes. I agree with the previous comment, ask them about what needs to be done to maintain the warranty. It seems excessive to have to send it out for two weeks just to have it cleaned, but maybe they can skip the inspection and just do the cleaning in-store and give it back to you on the same day?

I went to a local jeweler the day before my wedding and got my ring cleaned. They have wonderful customer service there and it’s where we got my husband’s ring. We were in and out in about 10 minutes and it was super sparkly for the wedding day! I’m not familiar with Kay’s policies, but I’d recommend going to a jeweler who can steam and inspect it in house a couple days before the wedding. That way you know you’ll have it on time and it’ll be nice and clean for the day of. Smiley smile

We got my ring at a local jeweler down the street from us- I go in about once a month and the steam clean it and check the setting (it’s a solitaire). Takes about 5-10 minutes depending on how busy they are

I got my wedding band from Kay's, and the warranty on mine requires us to go in for an inspection and cleaning every 6 months. I'm fairly certain they can do that in the store. Our 6-month appointment falls near the end of this month, which is about 2 months from the wedding. I'm planning to have them solder my engagement ring to the wedding band (it's an enhancer) at that appointment, then I'm planning to take my ring and fiancé's ring in to get cleaned again the day before the wedding.

I'm planning on taking mine to our local jeweler the day before the wedding, it takes them 5 minutes to clean it in their machine.

I have a moragite ring and clean with with Dawn Power wash and a baby toothbrush, and it looks brand new once I'm done with it!

I've heard horror stories of people sending their rings out through the jeweler and getting a ring back that's damaged or stones were replaced.

If you do get it professionally cleaned I would suggest taking it somewhere that does it in store.

I clean my ring about once a week/once every other week with a sonic cleaner I got on Amazon. I also have an old school "blue water" (as my fiancé calls it) that I sometimes do for a quick touch up. I don't plan on taking it anywhere to get cleaned before hand. I live in a major city, so it gets dirty quite easily. The sonic cleaner has been fantastic - I strongly recommend. It also cleans a ton of stuff (glasses, make up brushes, jewelry - so many things!)!

If you bring it into the store, Kay's should be able to clean in about 10 minutes. I've used Jared for this too. You shouldn't have to send it out to just get it cleaned.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies! I think I’m just going to take it in to get cleaned as opposed to sending it in for two weeks! I feel naked without my ring lol so this just works better for me! Smiley smile
