Clear envelopes for invitations? - Wax Seals

grrrlparts, on November 17, 2019 at 2:06 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 11

Question: Do any of you folks have experience with mailing wax-sealed invitations inside clear envelopes?

Backstory: I've been researching WW and other bridal forums with respect to
(USPS) mailing our wax sealed invitations. The bottom-line is, you can't mail wax sealed invitations 'as-is' due to how brittle the wax is. Not only is 'regular' wax susceptible to breakage, the USPS can't confirm whether hand-cancelled postage (which is an extra fee) will make it to its final destination. Even after hand-cancelling, there is a 'strong possibility' that the envelopes could pass through a USPS machine while in transit allowing for the seals to come undone - leaving an unpleasant waxy residue on the invite/envelope - and possibly being returned altogether.

Now, I don't like the idea of a 'belly band'...
However, I do like the idea of 'faux wax' sealed parchment envelopes. But - at the end of the day - I'm back where I started!

So - my question - clear envelopes....
WHAT'S THE SCOOP?
What did they look like?
Are they overkill?

Thoughts - feedback - opinions are all welcomed Smiley smile Thanks!

I was hoping I could be of help, but it sounds like you've put a lot more time, attention, and money into your invites than we plan to. Are you married to wax sealing your envelopes? Wax seals are super cute, but it sounds like forgoing the wax seal would save time, money, and stress, and its a detail very few are likely to notice or appreciate outside of the 3 seconds it takes someone to bust into your envelope.

I was going to suggest trying stickers that looked like wax seals but when I did a general Google search, the only ones that came up were faux wax or a plastic raised self adhesive wax seal which would still give you the same issue since neither are flat. This is a tough one. Good luck, I hope you are able to find something that will work or someone else will give a better suggestion.

    Hey there!!

Have you thought about perhaps using decorative or personalized stickers instead of wax seals to secure your envelopes closed? They would definitely not melt, as is an issue with the wax and would stick better to your envelopes so they would definitely not open (or crack) like wax. There are some really pretty wedding-themed ones available on Amazon, but I’m sure you would be able to find personalized ones easily enough if that is what you are more interested in?

You can do wax seals on the inner envelopes? Wax on outer envelopes have to be hand canceled, cost more in postage, and get stuck in machines if they aren't hand canceled.

What about an embossed sticker? You could do custom online or find premade ones on Etsy that could give you a similar look but would be more adhesive and flatter

Okay so I read this discussion about an hour ago and had a mini temper tantrum inside my head because I was dead-set on sealing my envelopes with wax. After Pintrest/Google/Youtube I decided to wrap my STD's in vellum jackets and wax-seal those instead and then just seal the envelope with a pretty sticker. We also have belly bands on our invites, so we can seal those with wax too.

    SO DISAPPOINTED!!! Smiley sad lol

One option is Artisaire. They make real wax seals with an adhesive backing. So it's like you are using a sticker to seal the envelope but the look of a GORGEOUS seal. Their wax is also very high quality (I saw it recommended in non-ad posts from several calligrapher/paperie companies I follow) so you can trust it's not going to melt.

Also, to your question! Clear envelopes are so gorgeous and a very fun touch.

I recommend sourcing vellum ones since quality is going to vary in plastics. JAM Paper has well-reviewed vellum envelopes at a reasonable price (35 cents each) and the company even sells them through Amazon so you can look at tons of reviews and get prime shipping.

Funnily enough, I've seen reviews that vellum envelopes seal better with a wax seal, washi tape, etc. than the traditional adhesive included on the envelopes.

I really wanted to try wax seals and gave up the idea after also finding out about USPS guidelines. Unless I can find a way to incorporate the wax seal inside the main envelope, so it's protected, I don't think I'll go that route. I may use wax seals to adhere tags to Christmas gifts just for the fun of trying it out, though!

So I read this thread last week and was upset because I was dead-set on using my wax seal. So this weekend we bought Vellum sheets and cut them to size and wrapped our STDs in a "Vellum jacket" and sealed that with wax. That was the solution we agree'd on.

First and foremost, we sincerely appreciate all of the thoughtful ideas and recommendations!

I'm ashamed to admit that almost immediately after I posted this, FH & I picked out/bought a wax seal anyway LOL It's shipping from Hong Kong and won't be here until later this month. Anyway, we've decided to move forward with the wax seal idea, but only with the invitations that we're sure can be "hand-delivered" personally or by trusted friends/family.

We understand that the wax seal thing is totally a minor detail, which will most likely go unnoticed. But with special consideration to those special people who will notice, it's a little something to make them smile.

I'm currently looking up the Artisaire, vellum (JAM paper thing), & STICKERRSSSSS. I can't thank you beautiful people enough!
