Cocktail Hour Action Station

Marisa-in-Love, on January 9, 2014 at 7:57 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

So our caterer is allowing us to have an action station during cocktail hour, which the FH and I are super excited about. We can either choose one of their recommended stations or design our own. So I'd like some opinions as though you were a guest. What would you like:

FH's favorite: Mashed Potato Bar (but we are having garlic mashed potatoes during dinner)

My favorite: Pasta Station (but we are having pasta as a course during dinner)

Design our own: Mac n’ Cheese Station (but it’s still technically pasta)

OR

Design our own: Gelato Bar (but should we have a dessert during cocktail hour?)

Opinions or suggestions ladies and gents (i know you've got them!)

We're having stations at our wedding, too but ours are for dinner. If you're serving mashed potatoes and pasta for dinner, I wouldn't choose those for the cocktail hour- I think people will be thinking 'Didn't we just eat this?' I think as a guest I would want some kind of appetizer/ finger food (as opposed to mac n cheese) so I'm not stuffed for dinner. Unfortunately all I can think of is sushi with a vegetarian option with rice and veggies. Haha.

Mac n cheese bar hands down... why? Because I have never heard of it. Everyone does Mashed potato and pasta bars. Yes Mac is still pasta but not the same.

Mashed Potato bar!!! Have martini glasses for people to put it in and tons of toppings. It seems like it would have the most options for your guess as far as personalization.

I like the gelato bar. If it is hot out,it would be a nice way to cool down. It would be different but in a good way.

My sister just attended a wedding back in November and everyone was RAVING about the mashed potato bar. It pleased everyone, young & old.

That being said, I'd vote for the mac & cheese bar. Technically it's still pasta but it's not Italian pasta and there's lots of different things they could do with it. Plus, it's different and I agree with Mrs Mikec that everyone does the mashed potato and pasta bar. Mac & Cheese makes you stand out a bit more.

Hmm. yeah, I wouldn't repeat something that you are already having as a part of your main meal. What about a TACO/NACHO BAR? That would be BOSS.

    Oh man ...

i agree with the others about the potato bar

mac and cheese is always a hit

i love the idea of a gelato bar - it's not a heavy dessert so you could pull this off bc it will probably be warm that day

by the way i didn't realize you were so close to me!

that said, what if you went PHILLY and did a cheesesteak bar or a pretzel bar? if you have people from out of town they would love this.

i'm trying to think of other "philly" stuff but pretzel would be the top of my list. you can go sweet or savory and have a TON of options... think of everything they have at Auntie Anne's! now I want a soft pretzel...

Nacho Bar, its more of a picky food and much less filling than a pasta or mashed potato bar! We may have one late in our reception for guests to munch on.

...and now I want a soft pretzel too, Kate... thanks haha! Smiley laugh

Yea, we live in Delco, so I'll talk to the FH about a Philly bar. He might really like that! Thanks!

I wouldn't repeat something you're having for dinner. If you eant a mashed potato bar, could you change your side dish at dinner to rice?

We're having a stir fry station, a pasta station, a carving station, and a slider station. Those are some other options.

I mean ... you could do a Philly-themed bar and have a variety of snacks like:

    Herr's

    Tastycakes

    Soft Pretzels

    Cheesesteak bites

    etc..

just another idea :-) I am in Montco and work in Chesco!

I LOVE mashed potato bars! But, mac and cheese is always awesome! But if you are serving pasta and potatoes for dinner, I might would do something different. I had wanted to do a taco bar, yum! And I saw an episode of "Four Weddings" and they had a bacon bar! Blew my mind!

We're actually doing a Boardwalk Bar but after dinner and dessert. If you wanted to do the gelato bar could you ask your venue if they could bring it out later in the night? That's what we did, they're leaving our cocktail hour area set up and then they'll start in with the cheesesteaks, Italian subs, funnel cake fries, pizza etc...so everyone can have their drunk food before they leave.
