Cocktail hour Bingo game? Too cheesy or fun ice breaker?

Christine, on April 3, 2015 at 11:29 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17

Hey Guys,

I just clicked on an article about games at weddings and was thinking of incorporating one of their games into my cocktail hour. I thought the idea of a bingo game with squares incorporating trivia facts my guests submit about themselves would be fun way for people to mingle and meet each other.

Here is the link:

Now, I would just go ahead and make it, but it's a lot of work to put together and lot of the comments on the article were pretty negative so I'm not sure if it's worth the effort if the reaction is going to be a big collective shoulder shrug. What do you guys think? What would your reaction be? Would you enjoy the scavenger hunt for "someone whose favorite food is toast?"

I think it's a cute idea in theory, but if I was a guest I probably wouldn't do it! I'm happy to get my drink and apps and catch up with the people I already know. I don't think it wouldn't get a side-eye, but you also may not get very much participation. I think if you really wanted to do it though, go for it!

Aw, this makes me so sad because I thought it was so cute! But, w/e... onto the next project then. If this is the consensus so far it's definitely not work spending hours developing when I have so much other stuff to do first.

I played that game in middle school on the first day. It was terrible then. Skip it.

I'm all for games at a wedding, but not the "break the ice" ones. I've always found time to kill during the actual reception (waiting for food, waiting for speeches, for dances, etc), and I like the idea of having something cute at the table for people to read or do, but I haven't figured out what yet. It's also nice for singles who have no one to talk to and don't get into the swing of things until the dancing starts...

It sounds too much like that team building stuff that is done at corporate retreats.

Cocktails, conversation, hors d'oeuvres. Maybe a polaroid camera for sign in book photos. But in my heart, I think adults can act like adults and entertain themselves.

If you want to have a fun little thing, you could place I Spy cards on tables for pictures people can take. If you google it, you can get an idea Smiley smile

I think I'm going to give an I Spy photo list to my little future nephew who will be one of 2 kids at the reception.

I'm not sure when games began to be introduced at weddings, but it always sounds odd to me. A cocktail hour is a great time for people to socialize with other people they haven't seen in a while. They have a drink, a few apps, talk, and mingle. Adults are really comfortable with that. Games? Maybe for a kid's birthday party, but I just don't see it happening at a wedding.

I think it would be fun at a bridal shower, but games are expected there... The last wedding I went to, they passed out cards with prompts (what should we name our kids, etc) that people filled out during the cocktail hour. I thought it was perfect because you could do it while still catching up with your friends and it didn't take away from anything.

I would rather spending that time catching up with people I haven't seen in a while and snacking.

I'm not into games of any kind at a wedding. And I would pass if asked to play. I will however have a couple drinks, eat some apps & mingle!! That's what cocktail hour is to me!!
